October at St. Andrew's

Services for this coming Sunday, the Twenty First Sunday after Pentecost will be at 8 and 10 AM. At the 10:00 service we will welcome Lily Young as a member of Christ’s church through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. (Lily is Kitty Lou Booty’s great-granddaughter.) We hope you will join us for worship and celebration, and to welcome Lily and her family.
Readings for this Sunday: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7; Psalm 66:1-11; 2 Timothy 2:8-15; Luke 17:11-19.

This is Sandwich Fair Weekend!!!! Come visit our booth in the Farmers’ Market. Enter through Gate C, which is off the Bean Road, and you will find us there. A number of talented crafts-people in our parish have created amazing, spectacularly decorated gourds, which will be for sale, along with our (now famous!) homemade jams, jellies, and dessert sauces.
Reminder to our booth staffers: Remember, we are counting on you! Please arrive on time, and come suitably dressed for the weather – rain or shine, hot or cold, wind or calm.

Xena's Blessing
We had a wonderful gathering for the Blessing of the Animals last Sunday – lots of dogs, a cat, a buddy, and a bucket of worms!!! See below for pictures of some of the dogs of Saint Andrew’s. Once again we all worshipped in peace, interspersed with the gentle jingle of collar tags. – truly a peaceable kingdom. Thank you, Val, for providing snacks for the dogs and to Pastoral Care for keeping the humans pleasingly fed. See more pet pictures below.

Adult acolytes and eucharistic ministers (LEMs): It’s time to brush up on what we do and why we do it. If you missed the first refresher/training, come on October 19 from 8:30 to 11:30. We will begin with Morning Prayer, followed by breakfast (so no need to eat first) then the training. The expectation is that everyone who serves will attend. Please let Lisa know so that we can plan accordingly. It is quite likely that we will finish well before noon.
There is a Service of Morning Prayer every Wednesday at 9 AM. We hope you will join us for worship and fellowship

Remember the Children of Incarcerated Parents: October is ChIPs month at St. Andrew’s. Last year our parish raised about $500 that was used to purchase Christmas gifts (both toys and books) for children of prisoners, so that these parents have the possibility of giving something to their children. The gifts are presented at holiday parties where each child receives a gift and a book.  Gifts should not exceed $20 retail value, must be new. Some restrictions apply: no jewelry, balloons, crayons, play dough, glue, bubbles, long sticks, knitting needles, glass items, clothing, sharp tools, or toy weapons of any kind.
If you prefer to contribute financially, make the check out to Saint Andrew’s with “ChIPs Project” in the memo line. The deadline is Friday, November 1st, so that our delegates can hand them on to the organizers at Diocesan Convenention.
The Annual Ingathering of our United Thank Offering boxes is coming up. (We turn them in at Diocesan convention on November 1.) If you need a blue box, please pick one up in the Parish Hall. Drop a coin in daily as you give thanks for the blessings of the day. UTO boxes and/or check donations must be turned in by Sunday, October 27. Please make checks payable to St. Andrew’s with UTO in the memo line.

No health insurance? Baffled by the new Affordable Care Act? If you could use help sorting out your options and signing up, Carol Tubman (our Senior Warden and unofficial Parish Nurse) is well informed through her work as a visiting nurse, and is happy to provide consultation. Contact: 539-2780 or cctubman@msn.com

We are looking for a volunteer or two who would be willing to work on getting vendors signed up for the Holiday Fair.  We do have some vendors who are coming back again this year, but hope to find some new craft people with interesting, salable items that would fit with our overall theme. Contact Lynne Clough or Patti Rau if you can help out in this way.

As Thanksgiving approaches… The New Hampshire Food Bank is able to provide the Food Pantry with only turkeys this year, so we are making a fervent request for items to help fill our 100 Thanksgiving baskets that go out to local families.  We would greatly appreciate: cans or jars of turkey gravy, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie mix that has spices in it, and 64 ounce containers of apple juice. Our deepest thanks to all of you for always supporting our food pantry.

Answer to last week's Bible Trivia:
What book in the Bible (well, the Apocrypha) has a geniune, tail-wagging dog? The Book of Tobit!

Familiar food for thought from Mary Oliver,
as the days shorten and the air cools…
Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountain and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clear blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
See you in church!
Blessings,
Heidi +
