FROM THE RECTOR

St. Andrew’s turns 92!

It’s our birthday! St. Andrew’s was consecrated on August 6, 1927, on the Feast of the Transfiguration. We will celebrate this anniversary on August 4 at our 9:00 service, and I hope you will be able to join us. Following the service there will be a potluck coffee hour. Please plan to bring something for coffee hour to add to our celebration.
Have you ever read the plaque in the back of the church under the organ case? Here is what it says:
In Memory of
FREDERICK CHARLES COWPER
Born in Pernambugo, Brazil
August 9, 1851
Died in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire
March 15 1929
For many years a missioner in
Carroll County

This church is his monument
His memorial is written in the
hearts of those who felt the
singular power of his words
and in this place seem still to
feel his spirit hovering near

From our archives: “St. Andrew’s began in the rural ministry of the Rev. Frederick Cowper (pronounced Cooper) who, in 1915, walked the roads north of his Sanbornville parish bringing instruction and the Eucharist to households along the way. By 1919 he was holding services at the Whittier School adjacent to the present church consecrated by Bishop Dallas in 1927.” Stay tuned for more of our history in next week’s Thursday Memo.
Blessings,
Caroline

PACK A PACK

David Manley will be collecting donations again this year for the Pack A Pack campaign. This is a great project of WMUR & Service Credit Union to collect Backpacks for school children that include needed school supplies. People can choose to sponsor a Backpack or two if they can or any amount they are able to donate. Each backpack including supplies cost about $15.00. Last year we provided 30 and this year I would like to provide between 50 - 100.

LOCAL EVENTS

The Man Who Came to Dinner
by George S. Kaufman & Moss
July 25 – August 3
at the Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth

“Life as they know it will never be the same for Mr. and Mrs. Stanley once radio celebrity Sheridan Whiteside arrives for dinner. Who knew there’d be penguins in the library and convicts in the foyer—and a whole lot more? Brilliant and witty, madcap and zany, this timeless classic combines the best of comedic literature with perfectly-crafted characters for one of the wildest romps ever in American theatre.” (Barnstormers publicity)

As a cast member, I can say there is never a dull moment in this play: the Stanley household is full of surprises. Come join us for a great evening (or matinee) of live - and lively - theatre!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Miracles

Why, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love, or sleep in the bed at night with any one I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with the rest,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring;
These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place.
To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same.
To me the sea is a continual miracle,
The fishes that swim—the rocks—the motion of the waves—the
        ships with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?

~ Walt Whitman - 1819-1892

FORWARD DAY BY DAY
THURSDAY, July 25
Matthew 20:26-27 It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave.

One of my favorite moments in the musical “Hamilton” is when George Washington tells Alexander Hamilton that he will step down from the presidency: “We’re gonna teach them how to say goodbye.” Washington wants the nation to outlive him; he knows that can’t happen if he becomes the focus of everyone ’s attention.

Jesus makes it clear that the holiest responsibility of a leader is to serve those who are being led. He isn’t concerned with power and influence or doling out grace and mercy to the highest bidder—they are free to everyone. He wants the focus to be on the message: serving the other, proclaiming peace, loving ourselves, loving our neighbor, and loving God.

MOVING FORWARD:
How can you better serve those whom you lead—the folks at home, at work, in your social circle?

FROM THE RECTOR

On Saturday at 5:00 p.m. St. Andrew’s will host a concert of chamber music, A Feast for the Soul. Proceeds will go to the SNAP/EBT Doubling Program of the Tamworth Farmer’s Market. Ellen Swindt, one of the performers, wrote the following about the concert. I hope you will join us and enjoy the music, as well as supporting this worthy cause.
Hello Music Friends,
There is little in this life that motivates me quite as much as gardening. I find these summer days, in all their length, too short to fit in quite all the planting and tending and harvesting I want to do. I've gardened my whole life, beginning in this backyard haven: my mother's garden.
My own garden is less flat and a lot less neat and organized. But it does contain green beans, onions, and a little corn. It has been providing me with my breakfast greens since early June and usually has something to offer for dinner as well. I appreciate the access I have to very fresh vegetables. It would be great if everyone had access to delicious and healthy food.
That's the idea behind a trio concert planned for Saturday, July 20th at 5:00 PM at St. Andrews in the Valley in Tamworth. Amy Berrier, Chris Nourse, and I have been rehearsing music to share with the community. We'll play Dvorak's Terzetto for two violins and viola, a Handel Sonata for violin and two violas, a Beethoven violin and piano sonata and my own "miniature sonatina" for viola and piano. The concert is free, but listeners may make a donation to the Tamworth Farmers' Market's SNAP/EBT Doubling program.
You can read about this project, which includes a GoFundMe campaign, on my blog
I'll hope to see many of you at Saturday's concert. If you can't make it to the concert, but you want to contribute to the project you do so through

GoFundMe by searching on "Feast for the Soul." or by mailing a check to Tamworth Farmers' Market, PO Box 25, Tamworth, NH 03886.

Blessings,
Caroline

 FROM Deb IN THE OFFICE

I have been the Carroll County local Board Chair for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program for over 5 years now.  This program provides Federal funds to Carroll County Food assistance programs, shelters and other allowable entities that apply for this assistance.  There are currently approximately 8 food assistance programs applying for these funds during a phase period located from Wakefield to Wolfeboro to Conway.

I have recently been tasked with a family member illness that has required me to travel back and forth to Maine and is taking a good part of my time. I am unable to continue this Volunteer position and am hoping that someone will be ambitious enough to take it on. It does require computer skills as they have many online forms.  I would hate to see these funds go unused but if someone doesn't step up in the next 30 days, that is what is going to happen as I have to step down. I am willing to guide this next person thru the process but the next phase is now ready with $11,000.00 in funds to be distributed and the process is time sensitive.

Please contact my cell 603-651-8938. And do pass this information on to likely prospects.
thank you

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Mysteries, Yes

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
    to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
    mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
    in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
    never be broken.

How people come, from delight or the
    scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say,
    “Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.

~ Mary Oliver

FORWARD DAY BY DAY
THURSDAY, July 18
Mark 2:27-28 Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”
We follow the rules to the letter so we can wear the badge of God’s approval. Sometimes, I worry we follow rules so we can mentally and spiritually check out of hard conversations with God. If we observe the sabbath as appointed and follow all the written instructions, we’ve checked all the boxes. This is an understandable struggle. We’re just trying our best to bring order out of the messiness of being human.
Jesus permits his hungry disciples to pluck ears of corn on the sabbath but the Pharisees forget God’s mercy. God does not want us to follow rules so stringently that we hurt our bodies. God creates the sabbath so we can take care of our bodies and commune with God in beautiful union—a holy timeout from the relentless march of time.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you struggle with striking a balance between following rules and extending mercy?

FROM THE RECTOR

Two weeks ago I wrote about the first St. Andrew’s Open Golf Tournament to be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. This week our planning group determined that there is simply too much to do to make this happen in September, and decided to postpone the tournament until next fall. This will give us the needed time to put together our literature and successfully recruit sponsors for the event.

We also have a change in the date for the Steak and Lobster Dinner, from August 16 to August 23, so be sure to mark your calendars with the new date. This change is to accommodate our lobster supply guy and cook, which is important!

I had a wonderful vacation week in North Myrtle Beach, SC with my sister and nieces. I love the southern beaches where the water is warm and the waves are usually bigger than on our coasts. There’s nothing I love better than floating and playing in the waves! And good seafood!! It was a time of much needed rest and renewal.

Many thanks to Cathie Lewis, Gretchen Behr-Svendsen and Lisa Thompson for leading Morning Prayer in my absence!

Below is a link to a fine article on the border crisis from Episcopal News Service, July 9, 2019: Bishops of all six Episcopal dioceses in Texas issue a joint statement decrying the inhumane conditions at our country’s borders

Finally, a little humor for the week:

ROBERTA NOBLEMAN PERFORMANCE
Actor Roberta Nobleman performance and discussion at Griswold Hall, Church of the Holy Spirit, Plymouth, Saturday, July 6, 2019 attended by Pat Adams, Cathie Lewis, Lisa Thompson, and Sammie Wakefield.

Roberta is an actor and sacred storyteller who gives voice and presence to many unnamed women in the Gospels. We enter into the daily lives of Peter’s wife, the woman with a flow of blood, and a woman so bent over that all she sees are people’s feet. Encounters with Jesus change their lives; and through Roberta’s skill and passion in telling their story, change ours, as well.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT - From Forward Day by Day

Luke 24:10-11 Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

I can’t help but feel frustrated that the other disciples struggle in disbelief about the message these women share. Jesus foretells his death and resurrection, so hearing from these women that it has happened shouldn’t be perceived as an “idle tale.” These women have journeyed alongside Jesus—at considerable risk to their lives—yet they aren’t believed when they tell of this profound experience.

Even if the male disciples can’t believe this chorus from their sisters and mothers and friends, these women are still chosen, favored with the revelation of resurrection. They witness the living, breathing Jesus bringing the gospel into full flower and share that news with the entire, sometimes-maddeningly disbelieving world, and no one can take that from them.

MOVING FORWARD: When was the last time someone struggled to believe an important story you were trying to tell? How did you respond?
