Stay Safe this weekend!

FROM THE RECTOR

I am pleased to announce that two of our parishioners are interested in being licensed to preach. Both are seminary trained and have experience preaching elsewhere. Ann is one of four ministers at Chocorua Church who rotate leading services there and has extensive experience in the Diocese of CT as well. Christi preached regularly at St. James Episcopal Church, Groveland, MA as part of her role as Minister of Spiritual Care.

The process for becoming a licensed preacher in the Diocese of NH requires study at the School of Ministry for those with less experience and training than Christi and Ann have. Because of their level of experience they will both preach at St. Andrew’s several times and meet with me for discussion and feedback after each sermon. On my recommendation to the Bishop they will then be licensed.

Ann is preaching this Sunday, and Christi will preach on February 20. I anticipate that they will each continue to preach every other month. I’m excited for this opportunity for them and for us – it is always enriching and formative to hear different voices from the pulpit. (And I admit I won’t mind a break from preaching every week!) Thank you, Ann and Christi!

Blessings, CarolineING

DIOCESAN CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

At our diocesan convention in November, Bishop Rob announced that the diocese is beginning work on a capital campaign to fund congregational, clergy and lay leadership initiatives. Information about these funds for New Life will be featured in the Thursday Memo in the months ahead so we can consider how they could directly impact our church’s ability to attract, keep and nurture quality clergy and lay leaders to help us flourish.

Consider: What challenges do you imagine the Bishop faces when wanting to support or strengthen new or existing ministries?

Introduction to Diocesan Capital Campaign From an earlier Thursday Memo:

After many years of consideration, Bishop Rob and leaders of the Diocese have decided to explore the readiness of Episcopalians in New Hampshire to support a capital campaign to raise funds for the vitality of the church.

We will be sharing updates with you so we can all follow the progress with the whole diocese. There is a dedicated area on the diocesan website devoted to this effort. There is also a brief survey there to share your thoughts about the proposed projects to help complete a diocesan vision. Please review the videos on the website from Bishop Rob and those who have already benefited from the proposed funding areas. https://www.givingsites.com/deeproots

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Hymn 435

1 At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow,
every tongue confess him King of glory now;
'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord,
who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

2 At his voice creation sprang at once to sight:
all the angel faces, all the hosts of light,
thrones and dominations, stars upon their way,
all the heavenly orders in their great array.

3 Humbled for a season, to receive a name
from the lips of sinners, unto whom he came;
faithfully he bore it spotless to the last,
brought it back victorious when from death he passed;

4 bore it up triumphant, with its human light,
through all ranks of creatures, to the central height,
to the throne of Godhead, to the Father's breast,
filled it with the glory of that perfect rest.

5 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue
all that is not holy, all that is not true.
Look to him, your Savior, in temptations' hour;
let his will enfold you in its light and power.

6 Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again,
with his Father's glory o'er the earth to reign;
for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow,
and our hearts confess him King of glory now.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY

3rd Sunday after Epiphany

The Collect

Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson                              Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10

Our first lesson recalls a great day in the history of Israel; in the restored city of Jerusalem Ezra gathers the people together so that they may hear and understand the law of Moses.  It would seem that many of the people were unfamiliar with their traditions, and this reading may have taken place at a time when their laws and stories had been newly gathered together and edited.  We note the people’s reverence for their scriptures, and the manner in which they are not only read but also expounded to them, probably in their own language of Aramaic, since the law was written in Hebrew.

Psalm 19

A hymn which glorifies the Creator God, with special praise for God’s law and a prayer for avoidance of sin.

The Second Lesson                    1 Corinthians 12:12-31a

In this passage Paul describes Christians as the body of Christ.  Each individual is a necessary part of the body.  Against any tendencies toward disunity, it must be remembered that all have been baptized into one body and have drunk of one Spirit.  Just as there are different organs and limbs of the human body, so individuals have different abilities and ministries.  But none can be dispensed with.  They are all joined together to care for one another.

The Gospel                               Luke 4:14-21

In our gospel story Jesus returns to Galilee and enters the synagogue in Nazereth.  Here he gives what has been called his inaugural sermon.  He reads from the book of the prophet Isaiah.  These words offer hope and good news to the poor, and tell of healing and freedom for the oppressed.  This time, Jesus says, has begun.

Miracles

In these times of struggle and longing for the miraculous, Whitman offers words to live by, now more than ever: if we have eyes to see, we are awash in miracles…

Why, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love, or sleep in the bed at night with any one I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with the rest,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring;
These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place.

To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same.

To me the sea is a continual miracle,
The fishes that swim—the rocks—the motion of the waves—the ships with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?

AFTER THE 9AM SERVICE

FROM THE RECTOR

                Thank you all for your patience and understanding of the need to move back to Zoom worship. I know it is disappointing – it is for me as well – but as the Covid numbers continue to rise I think it is the right decision for now. There is discussion in the news that the Omicron variant will not last as long as the Delta variant did, and in fact that the peak may arrive in the next few weeks. So I am hopeful that we will be able to return to in person worship well before Easter (April 17). More and more Episcopal churches in the Diocese are closing every day, so we are not alone in being online only. I wish I could give a more specific time line for reopening, but there is simply no way to predict when the numbers will begin to fall. As has been the case all along, the last thing I want is to have an outbreak at St. Andrew’s, even if most of us would only have mild symptoms. There is always the chance that someone would become seriously ill, and we can prevent that by worshipping online.

Some have wondered if the 8:00 service could continue, because there are usually only around 10 present. But if we had an 8:00 service and not a 10:00 service, others would also want to attend, and attendance would likely be higher. So please be patient a little longer. I pray we will be able to return to in-person worship soon!

Blessings, Caroline

READINGS FOR SUNDAY

2nd Sunday after Epiphany

The Collect

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Lesson                              Isaiah 62:1-5

In our Hebrew scripture lesson the prophet continues to look forward to the full restoration of Jerusalem, hoping that the city may one day be a source of joy, as a bride is to her bridegroom.  It is some years after the return from exile, and Jerusalem has still not regained her glory.  But the prophet trusts in the Lord.  The city will become God’s crown.  The land will no longer be known as Forsaken, but will be called Married.

Psalm 36:5-10

This psalm exults in the boundless love of God, saving humans and animals alike.  God is the fountain of life, and in God’s light we see light.

The Second Lesson                    1 Corinthians 12:1-11

In this reading Paul commends spiritual gifts, but instructs the Corinthians in their proper use in the service of Jesus’ lordship. Spiritual gifts always present dangers as well as benefits, and there can even be false spirits.  The Spirit of God will never cause one to believe that the earthly, crucified Jesus could be despised, for this same Jesus has become Lord of the church.  It is also important to recognize that there are many different gifts of the one Spirit.  All are to be used for the common good.

The Gospel                               John 2:1-11

Our gospel is the story of the changing of water into wine during a wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.  The evangelist enriches the narrative with deep symbolism.  As the first of Jesus’ many signs, this miracle points forward to his hour of greatest glory, when all things will be transformed by his death and resurrection.  The best wine will be saved until last and will be given in astonishing abundance.
