-            FROM THE INTERIM RECTOR           -

I didn't take many pictures while on vacation, but here are a couple. The first is at Lower falls, on the Kangcamagus Hwy, and the other is at Gunstock. We spent the week that my sister and nieces were here enjoying local sights.
One of the highlights was the zip line at Gunstock, though the girls also loved the mountain coaster and bungee jumping. I have wanted to do a long zip line for ages, and had targeted this one. After we posted pictures of our day at Gunstock, my brother called and said he really wants to do the zip line too, so he's coming up in October. I'll be happy to go again!
The other highlight was kayaking on Silver Lake. My back didn't allow that, but the others paddled out to the middle of the lake, where they found five loons. They were thrilled, especially since we had gone to the Loon Center in Moultonborough the day before and learned all about them.
We also enjoyed the Madison Boulder, a trip to the Seacoast, the Tamworth Street Fair and of course, the Lobster Dinner at St. Andrew's! It was a great week.
I spent the second week doing almost nothing - mainly reading, and a little yard work. Both weeks were a blessing. But I missed you, especially on Sundays, and am glad to be back among you.
Three Upcoming Funerals
We will bid goodbye to several beloved friends in the next six weeks.
Kathie Johnson's funeral is this Monday, August 28, at 1:00. Her ashes will be interred in the St. Andrew's Memorial Garden, and a reception will follow.
Note: if you can help with the reception after Kathie's service, please call Cathie Lewis at 954-651-8690.
There will be a memorial service for Tommie Dayton, Cathie Lewis' mother, on Saturday, September 30 at 1:00.
And on Saturday, October 7, at 2:00 we will celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. Peg Custer. The Rt. Rev. Rob Hirschfeld will preside.
Please remember the families of Kathie, Tommie and Peg in your prayers as they continue to grieve for their loved ones.

-                SEARCH COMMITTEE               -
“The (parish) profile serves as the parish’s introduction to potential candidates.  At its best, the profile uses images and words to describe the personality, mission, ministry, and ministers of the parish; and denotes the passion and gifts for ministry it seeks in its next Rector.”
(2017 Search Committee Handbook, Diocese of NH)

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
Small-group Summary Presentation after Church, Sunday, August 6, 2017
Search Committee member Pat Adams led the discussion which focused on what we learned from the six House Meetings. The three areas discussed were: What we do well, what needs improvement, and what characteristics we would like to find in our next Rector.
We are a welcoming church with a strong lay participation in worship and in the community. We need to focus more on Christian formation, scheduling church and community events with enough lead-time, modeling who we are in the community, and welcoming participation in Children-Youth ministry.
We need these, but do we want them? Jim Theodore, a professional head-hunter said that if he were coming here for an interview, he would ask us, “What is it you would want me to be able to do, short-term and long-term?”  A very good question for us all to ponder in prayer.
The whole parish was thanked for their support of the Committee through prayer, and for their active participation in preparing the Profile.
Next year, after interviews and visits to parishes, the last step in this process, will be to present two or three candidates to the Vestry, who will make the final decision on who we call to be our next Rector.

-                 FOOD FOR THOUGHT               -

A blessing for our conflicted and divided times:
May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers,
half truths, and superficial relationships,
that you may live deep within your heart.
May God bless you with anger at injustice,
oppression, and exploitation of people,
that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who
suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war,
that you may reach out your hand to comfort them
and to turn their pain into joy.
May God bless you with enough foolishness to believe
that you can make a difference in this world,
that you can do what others claim cannot be done.
And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you,
and remain with you always.  Amen.

-      FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY     -
THURSDAY, August 24

1 Corinthians 4:13 When slandered, we speak kindly. We have become like the rubbish of the world, the dregs of all things, to this very day.

Christianity today is a little too clean, and we Christians are far too polished. While we create plenty of garbage, we act like none of it belongs to us. We sip tentatively from a silver cup, having no idea what it means to drink the dregs that Jesus consumed.
If I wanted to get serious about this whole thing of following Jesus, I might do well to start with Paul’s list of inverted expectations. When slandered, I might try to speak kindly. When reviled, I would bless. When persecuted, I would endure. Perhaps most importantly, I would set aside the “I” and live into the “we.”

My friend Hunter says this about making music, “It’s not a ‘me’ thing; it’s a ‘we’ thing.” The phrase works for everything from bands and sports teams to families and churches. Yes, the “we” is messy. Of course we are—we are made from the dust. When I feel too clean to be a follower of Jesus, I try to let the dirt remind me about the “we” things and disregard the “me” things.

MOVING FORWARD: Grab a trash bag, gloves, and some friends and do some clean-up work in your neighborhood.
