JOIN US FOR WORSHIP
THIS SUNDAY, August 5th, The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, there will be ONE SERVICE ONLY AT 9 AM
There is a service of Morning Prayer on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m.

We hope you will join us for worship and fellowship.
CENTERING PRAYER-With Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast
Please join us in the sanctuary at 5:30 Tuesday evenings during the month of August for an opportunity to deepen and/or broaden your prayer life.  Centering Prayer is a simple practice of meditation which focuses on your personal relationship with God. Whereas you may ‘center’ alone, the combined energy of a group of people is noteworthy.  Thomas Keaton and Richard Rohr are advocates of quiet prayer, and research has clearly demonstrated its value for adults and children (Newburg). The Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast will lead us in this prayer practice. We will end no later than 6:30. No experience is necessary. Come and pray with us. For more information please see Midge.

FROM THE RECTOR
St. Andrew’s Now Has TWO Deacons!

As many of you know, the Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast was ordained to the Diaconate in the Diocese of Bethlehem (PA) last fall. She is now licensed as a Deacon in the Diocese of New Hampshire, and will begin to serve in our Sunday liturgies alongside the Rev. Kevin Mort this Sunday. Kevin, Midge and I met yesterday to discuss how to divide the liturgical duties of the deacon between the two of them.

I like this summary of the liturgical role of deacons, written by the Rt. Rev. Stephen T. Lane, Bishop of Maine: “Deacons have specific liturgical responsibilities in the worship of the Episcopal Church that are intended to reflect their role as servants of Christ. These duties include taking the Good News of God’s love to the world (proclaiming the Gospel), bringing the concerns of the world into the church (working with others on the prayers of the people), modeling servanthood (preparing the table) and sending the people of God out to serve the world (proclaiming the dismissal). Ideally, each of these liturgical duties is matched by real world and congregational ministries.”

Kevin, Midge and I decided that one of them will serve as “Deacon of the Word” and the other as “Deacon of the Table”, alternating roles Sunday to Sunday. This Sunday Midge will be the Deacon of the Word, and therefore will proclaim the Gospel, introduce the Confession and give the Dismissal at the end of the service. Kevin will serve as Deacon of the Table, setting the table for Communion, and administering the bread during Communion with me.

Please join me in welcoming Midge into the liturgical life of our church! It is a joy to serve with both her and Kevin.

Butler’s Bridge Closure
Butler Bridge, at the intersection of Whittier Rd and Hwy 113, is closed as of today. Replacing the bridge is expected to take four weeks, so plan on taking an alternate route to St. Andrew’s for most of the rest of August.
RAISE THE ROOF

Monday August 27th is assembly day. We will meet in the Parish Hall at 9:30 to sew the 12 1/2” patches into a quilt.

On Monday, September 10th, assuming all is ready, we will put the quilt on the frame and begin quilting, beginning at 9:30 in the Parish hall.

Everyone is invited to help make this happen. If you would like to participate in any way please let Barbara Lord know. Or just come to the Parish Hall on those days and enjoy the fellowship!

Pledge cards for Raise the Roof project can be found
on the back wall bulletin board in the parish hall.

Matthew 27:55 Many women were also there, looking on from a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee and had provided for him.

When a clearly mentally ill man visited my church, many of us were afraid to approach him. A woman named Verglea took his hand and brought him up to the communion rail. Verglea and others like her are the spiritual descendants of the women in today’s gospel.

We should never forget that the world that Jesus lived in was very different from our own. Women were treated abhorrently—they could not own property and were often forced into marriages. They had little or no status politically or personally.

Living under such conditions often forces human beings into passive and fearful postures. But the women in Matthew’s Gospel aren’t defined by either of those characteristics. In fact these women, unlike the religious leaders who reject Jesus, have followed him and supported his ministry. These women hear God’s voice in the message that in Christ there is no male or female. They believe, as does Verglea, that all are welcome in the kingdom of God.

MOVING FORWARD: God has blessed the church with many women who preach, preside, and serve. Are there other people you know who may not be appreciated as they should? See them today.

 FOOD FOR THOUGHT
At the setting of the sun,
in the enveloping darkness of night,
at the interplay of hours
with sunlight giving way to moonlight,
we step from the day into the night
with a desire to be still,
and in being still,
we turn to you, O God,
and in turning to you
to return to the creative depths of our soul.
At the setting of the sun,
in the darkness of the night
we turn to you.
