FROM THE RECTOR

I am excited to offer a Lenten program this year called “The Poetry of Lent: A Lenten Companion to Mary Oliver's Devotions”, offered by the SALT Project.
From their website: “Every journey needs a guide - and what better guide to the 40 days of Lent than the beloved poet, Mary Oliver?

Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Oliver is widely celebrated as an accessible, insightful observer of the natural world, the life of faith, and the interplay between the two. Imagine a six-week journey with Oliver at your side, illuminating ancient passages of scripture; provoking bite-sized meditations on key Lenten themes; and pointing toward everyday practices for individuals and families. All you need is the devotional booklet, a Bible, and a copy of Oliver’s wonderful collection, Devotions (the poems can also be found online).”

For those of you who would like to participate in this Lenten study, I’d like to know your preferences for a meeting time. Please plan to meet with me after church on Sunday to help me decide the time. If you will not be in church on Sunday, please email me at rectorsaitv@gmail.com and let me know your thoughts.

The choices are:

·       Wednesday evening beginning with a light soup and salad supper at 5:30 or 6:00, followed by discussion for an hour. If you prefer an evening offering, please let me know which time is better for you.

·     Wednesday morning at 10:30

·     Wednesday afternoon at 1:30

The devotional booklets are available in the Parish Hall for anyone who is interested, and I will have my copy of Mary Oliver’s book, Devotions, for your perusal. Devotions is available from Amazon for $20.40, the E-book from Amazon or Google play is $15.99 or you may read the poems online.

SHROVE TUESDAY

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
The grasshopper, I mean –
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down –
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and flies away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER
COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER
The Food Pantry thanks you for your contributions throughout the year.
The monthly item for February is razors for men/women.

The Community Food Center (CFC), which operates out of St. Andrew’s Church on Old Route 25 in Tamworth, is looking for new volunteers to help with this important program.  The Center is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 am to noon for clients to come in and pick up their food. On each of these days, two volunteers staff the Center and a CFC Board Member is on hand to help and answer questions. Scheduling is done bi-monthly and substitutes provide flexibility for volunteers who have other commitments.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY

THURSDAY February 21, 2019
Mark 12:16-17 And they brought one. Then [Jesus] said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Jesus said to them, “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at him.

A trap has been set for Jesus in our gospel passage today.

He asks those setting the trap to show him a coin. As we have come to expect, Jesus’ answer about taxes is brilliant. The coin in question bears the image and title of the emperor. The coin, therefore, belongs to the emperor. So sure, pay your taxes.

But Jesus does not let his audience forget that they, too, bear an image: the image of God. They can give money to the emperor, but they owe allegiance to the One whose image they bear. Give to God the things that are God’s.

MOVING FORWARD: Offer up something holy and precious—your time, affection, or a donation—to God today.
