JOIN US FOR WORSHIP

THIS SUNDAY, April 7, 2019, The 5th Sunday of Lent,  there will be one service only at 9:00 a.m.

Note: The Ethiopian Cross will be on the retable through Lent.  It's open pattern allows both light and darkness through it.  With God's help, may our hearts open to the light and darkness in our own selves.  And may we be reconciled, renewed and redeemed in the image of Christ.

FROM THE RECTOR
Part 3 of our Parish Meeting Planning Sessions is this Sunday, April 7 following the 9:00 service. In our first session, at the Annual Meeting on the first Sunday in February, we looked at highlights over the past year. Then on the first Sunday in March we discussed what we most value about St. Andrew’s and our hopes and dreams for the next several years. Now it’s time to take all of that information, prioritize it and determine how we can make some of our hopes and dreams become reality. The first two meetings were great! Please come to our meeting on Sunday and add your voice.

Don’t forget our potluck supper and game night tomorrow evening at 6:00. Many of you have at one time or another expressed interest in having potluck suppers to gather for fellowship. That’s exactly what this will be – a relaxed evening with food, fun and time to enjoy the company of each other. There will be lots of games, or time to just sit and talk. Bring a camping type of dish and your favorite games, and enjoy some time together!

Many thanks to Cathie Lewis for organizing the reception for Frank Altomare’s funeral last Saturday, and to those who helped set up and clean up. The church was full, and just about everyone came to the reception. It was beautifully done, as always.

Lent Madness 2019 The Tenth Annual Saintly Smackdown!
With its unique blend of competition, learning, and humor, Lent Madness allows participants to be inspired by the ways in which God has worked through the lives of saintly souls across generations and cultures. Throughout Lent, thirty-two saints will do battle to win the coveted Golden Halo. Based loosely on the NCAA basketball tournament of a similar name, this online devotion pits saints against one another in a bracket as voters choose their favorites throughout this penitential season.
Here’s how to participate: on the weekdays of Lent, information is posted at www.lentmadness.org about two different saints. Each pairing remains open for 24 hours as participants read about and then vote to determine which saint moves on to the next round. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. Click on the link above to sign up for a daily email with information about each saint. And check the door by the kitchen for the full sized poster.

Some Questions You Might Ask
Is the soul solid, like iron?
Or is it tender and breakable, like
the wings of a moth in the beak of the owl?
Who has it, and who doesn’t?
I keep looking around me.
The face of the moose is as sad
as the face of Jesus.

The swan opens her white wings slowly.
In the fall, the black bear carries leaves into the darkness.
One question leads to another.
Does it have a shape? Like an iceberg?
Like the eye of a hummingbird?
Does it have one lung, like the snake and the scallop?
Why should I have it, and not the anteater
who loves her children?
Why should I have it, and not the camel?
Come to think of it, what about the maple trees?
What about the blue iris?
What about all the little stones, sitting alone in the moonlight?
What about roses, and lemons, and their shining leaves?
What about the grass?

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY

THURSDAY April 4, 2019
Romans 8:23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

One of my pet peeves is waiting—in long lines at the airport, in freeway traffic, for elevators that take an eternity to reach my floor. Just as my spirit groans with the discomforts of life, Creation also cries out when its natural order is interrupted. The earth groans and longs for renewal and restoration—groans with the expectation of Jesus’ return and all things being made new.

As we move toward Eastertide, may we develop a deeper awareness of how our choices affect the world around us. May we work to become better stewards of creation and tend to this place the way we would attend to an expectant mother—with intention and compassion. We live in the hope of a tomorrow when the lamb will lie down with the lion, when we will study war no more, when we—and all of creation—are restored to our original purpose.

MOVING FORWARD: What is one of your pet peeves? What can it teach you about your faith?

Members from Camp Calumet's Choral Singing Retreat joined us for Morning Prayer this week. We had a grand time focusing on the spirit and music of J. S. Bach. Our own Val May played the harp during our prayer time; and our organist, Bunny Thompson, accompanied the four-part harmony of several Bach Chorales we all sang together with great gusto. Many thanks to Judy Smith of Calumet and Cathie Lewis for bringing us together in spirit and community.
