FROM THE RECTOR

There are so many terrible events in the news these days that it’s easy to feel helpless and to let our hearts become hardened to the suffering of others. Following are two ways we can help in small ways.

We’ve all seen shots of the devastation in the Bahamas, and as Hurricane Dorian moves up the coast damage is occuring in our southeastern states as well. One way to help with hurricane relief is through Episcopal Relief and Development at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/what-you-can-do/give/donate-now/individual-donation/

Another painful topic in our news is the detention of migrant children and families at our southern border. Episcopal Migration Ministries is working with the Diocese of Texas and others to deal with this situation, and our summer Deacon Midge Pendergast has given me information on an initiative her diocese is supporting. We have the opportunity to join in this effort by donating toiletries in reusable grocery bags.

TOILETRIES – All travel size—PLEASE REMOVE FROM PACKAGING
1.    Toothpaste
2.    Toothbrush
3.    Comb
4.    Deodorant stick (not spray)
One of each item is to be packed in a reusable grocery bag.

Midge has generously offered to take our donations back to her church and mail them for us. If you would like to participate in this effort the deadline for bringing items to the church is Sunday, September 22.

Finally, we should never underestimate the power of prayer. For victims of the destructive forces of hurricanes, for those in border security detention centers, for victims of gun violence and their families and loved ones and all the other crises and tragedies in our world; our prayers for a better world and our commitment baptismal vows are surely as important as our donations of time and treasure.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Font of Knowledge

From you is contained the truth
of how to live our lives well.
Live simply. Go the extra mile.
Do not judge. Give generously.
Respect self and others. Rest.
Love unconditionally. Forgive.
This wisdom and much more
you offer for our spiritual benefit.
It is left for us to drink fully
from you, our Font of Knowledge.

Today: I respond to the Knowledge given to me.

FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER

 FROM DEB IN THE OFFICE

Working full time had brought it's own challenges to keeping my volunteer jobs. Now I have a family illness that requires my attention and need to step down from my outside volunteer jobs.  I have loved giving my dedication to each of them but need to recognize my limits. I have found a replacement for my Board Chair position with the Emergency Food and Shelter Program and now need to fill my volunteer position as Treasurer for the Community Food Center.  I am hoping to have my replacement in place within the next 4 months before I resign my position January 2020 (or sooner if possible).  Please contact me in the office if you might be interested in helping out and would like more information.  Thank you.

Psalm 37:1 Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; do not be jealous of those who do wrong.
Like the psalmist, we might proclaim that nice guys finish first, but many of us secretly harbor a preference for the rascals. We have aphorisms that reinforce this notion: If you can’t beat them, join them! You have to fight fire with fire. We say Everyone does it! to justify our own less-than-savory choices. By and large, we value boldness over kindness.
Jesus’ life, though, offers an example of boldness rooted not in zero-sum competitiveness but in everyone-wins generosity. The competitive paradigm of winners and losers that permeates our culture is exactly contrary to walking in the Way of Jesus. The way to celebrate and proclaim Christ’s victory is to boldly and confidently work to ensure that everyone around us wins, offering love, kindness, compassion, and mercy.

MOVING FORWARD: Read Psalm 37 today. What is it saying to you?
