To help us prepare for Christmas this year we will have a book study using Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent. The description of this book on Amazon.com says, “In Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus. Join her as she traces the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. These stories open conversations around connections of the Gospel stories to the Old Testament, the role of women in first-century Jewish culture, the importance of Mary’s visitation and the revolutionary implications of Mary’s Magnificat, the census and the stable, and the star of Bethlehem and the flight to Egypt. The book provides a rich and challenging learning experience for small groups and individual readers alike.”

ADVENT BOOK STUDY
Advent Book Study Begins in Two Weeks!
To help us prepare for Christmas this year we will have a book study using Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent. This will be a four-week study that will begin on Wednesday, November 20, skip November 27 (the day before Thanksgiving), and then meet on December 4, 11 and 18. We will meet either at noon or at 5:30 pm on those Wednesdays, based on your input. Either time will begin with a simple soup meal. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
In the Gospel Reading for the First Sunday in Advent, the writer of Matthew’s Gospel invites us to Keep Awake! For we do not know on what day the Lord is coming. As 21st century Christians what does it mean for us to keep awake? With the pace of life, the needs of family, friends, co-workers and fellow community members, what are the ways we can stay present to where God is in our lives.
Please join us for a time of contemplation, conversation, and reflection on how the stories of Advent can help us know what it means to keep awake. We will spend time with the stories of Mary and Joseph and consider how their witness might inform our lives of faith.
FROM THE RECTOR
A huge thank
you to everyone who stayed to help with our clean up day last Sunday! We got so
much done, and the outside work was finished just in the nick of time. You
can’t really see the finished product under the snow and ice that fell Monday
and Tuesday. But all the gardens we cut back, and the leaves and fallen
branches were raked up. Maybe the snow will melt before the Bishop comes, but
either way our grounds are in good shape.
A lot was
accomplished inside as well: pews and the woodwork in the chancel were cleaned
and polished, windows cleaned and screens removed, and the Prince Room looks
amazing! Thank you all!! And be sure to check out all the pictures Lisa took.
A note about
our ongoing attempt to keep both the kitchen and the Prince Room tidy: It seems that
every time we have a pot luck things are left on the kitchen counters. Those
who use the kitchen need clear counter space, and when the counters are full
the clutter is often moved to the Prince Room. In an effort to remedy this,
we’ve placed several unidentified items on the benches in the Parish Hall.
Please claim them if they’re yours; if they are still there on Monday we will
dispose of them. Please help us keep the kitchen and the Prince Room
uncluttered.
Bishop
Hirschfeld will be with us on November 24. Note that we will have only
one service at 9:00, followed by coffee hour and time with the bishop. Come and
welcome him, and celebrate with our Confirmands, Chris Mills and Preston Mills,
and John and Joan Marshall who will reaffirm their marriage vows as they
celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.

Dinner will begin at 6 PM followed by the Pie Auction at 7 held by the entertaining & charming Christopher Boldt. Tickets are $15 with a simple supper. Children under 12 are just $5. BYOB beer or wine. Please tell your friends and acquaintances as this is an entertaining evening and a great place to pick up the following Thursday's Thanksgiving dinner's dessert.
