FROM THE RECTOR

The Pie Sale last Saturday was a HUGE success!!! Abundant thanks to Lin Frank and Tina Quinn for organizing our pie sale at the Tamworth Farmer’s Market!! What a wonderful morning it was! There was a crowd gathered around the tent all morning. You all donated aver a hundred items to be sold and all of them were sold, for proceeds of almost $1500!

Thank you to all who helped – to Patti, Lisa and Gretchen who worked the sale all morning, to everyone who baked, and to all who bought goodies!  We definitely need to do this again!

I hope you got to meet our Parish Baker! Thanks to Lisa for painting the face, and to Lin’s wonderful creativity in putting her together – with a real pie crust accompanying her!

The Bishop is coming for his semi-annual visitation on November 7. Following the service he will have a Q and A session for the parish, and then a meeting with the Vestry. I hope you will be able to attend church that day!

Blessings,  Caroline

READINGS FOR SUNDAY
Sunday, October 17, 2021
Pentecost 21 Proper 24, Year B

The Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson                     Job 38:1-7

Now God appears to Job out of the whirlwind and demands to know whether he is wise enough to question the Creator of the heavens and earth.  The challenge seems almost brutal.  Job, out of all his distress, had complained about the unfairness of life.  He is now forced to recognize how little he understands the ways of the world and of God.  More importantly for him, however, he at  last has a direct relationship with the Lord.

Psalm                              104:1-9, 25, 37b

The psalm describes the wonders of the world created and renewed by the Lord’s Spirit.

The Second Lesson          Hebrews 5:1-10

In this New Testament lesson we hear how through obedience and suffering Christ reached the perfection of his destiny and was designated by God to be the eternal high priest.  The high priesthood of Jesus is the great theme of the Letter to the Hebrews.  Like the high priests of the old covenant, Christ is chosen from among human beings and so has sympathy with human weakness.  But he is the Son and has now been named high priest forever. He succeeds Melchizedek, a royal and priestly figure from antiquity, and has been made the source of salvation for all who trust in him.

The Gospel                              Mark 10:35-45

In the gospel story Jesus’ followers still expect that his way will quickly lead to a state of glory in which they want special places.  Jesus tells them of a different path of discipleship.  First Jesus and then his disciples must experience the cup of sorrow and the baptism of death.  They are not to live and act like worldly rulers.  They must lead in servant-hood.  Their example is Jesus, who as the Son of Man serves and gives his life.

 PIE SALE UPDATE

Pie Sale Extravaganza!

St. Andrew’s family of bakers had our debut at the Tamworth Farmers’ Market Saturday October 9th and what a spectacular event!  It was a beautiful crisp fall day; we had over 100 baked goods to offer for sale; the Market attendees were anxious to purchase (we sold out of everything!); and there was an impromptu chorus of the Doxology—with an encore request!

The biggest attraction and certainly the event’s show stopper…was the appearance of THE Parish Baker!  Lin Frank put her creativity into overdrive and created our very own pumpkin-person baker complete with rolling pin and a real pie crust!  Lisa Thompson’s artistic talents provided our baker with facial features that rivalled those of Julia Child!

More photos in the Gallery

Many heartfelt thanks go out to the numerous bakers who provided several tables full of goodies!  Also, many thanks to those who helped the day of the Market:  George and Patti, Gretchen, Lisa, Lin and Lise (our younger sister…yes, there is another sister!).  All of your efforts helped us to realize over $1400.00 in sales which will go to support our Outreach Ministries.

St. Andrew’s was such a success at the Market, there was a request for us to return the following week!  Maybe not next week, but looking forward to doing this again!

In gratitude for all the St. Andrew’s family,

The Parish Bakers Planning Committee

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER RETREAT

Tending Our Heart, Mind, and Body

November 5th – 6th, Friday at 4 pm to Saturday at 2:30 pm~ at the Spirituality Center

Cost: $100.00. Includes overnight accommodation and meals.

Life as a human being has always had its complexity. These days with a global pandemic, natural disasters, facing racism and other oppressions, compounded with a 24-hour news cycle and social media, being human becomes trickier. Finding our way, following a path that is authentic to our personal truth while participating in society, takes skill and practice. How do we live a more centered life while navigating the fierce struggle of choosing sides?

This overnight retreat will offer space, silence, teachings, and practices for opening the heart, mind, and body to what is present in our days. Using four fundamental steps of practice—pause, allow, tend with love, rest in presence – we will consider how to build these steps into a rhythm for everyday life.

All are welcome, no matter where you find yourself on your spiritual journey, as you live into being human.

Presenter: Christi Humphrey, M.Div.

Our time together will include:

  • a breathing practice for settling and grounding
  • reconnecting our mind, body, and spirit in order to recognize what is present
  • offering loving-kindness to ourselves, our loved ones, and our world
  • contemplating what it is like to rest in the loving presence behind creation

Registration information can be found at this link https://ndspiritualitycenter.org/programs/

Let me know if I can answer any questions. Be well, Christi

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Then God answered Job out of the whirlwind:
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?“

                   —Job 38.1, 4

Last night I woke from a dream of doom
fearing for the future of the world,
mummy-wrapped in despair, dread burning hot
in my basement. I couldn't sleep.

When fear for the world overtakes me
I join Job on the ash heap, questioning suffering,
ranting against injustice, suffocating for hope.

And God answers.
Creation is bigger than you,
and greater than your suffering, even greater,
far greater, than all the suffering of the world.
It's hard to see from your little corner
but the universe is good, and beautiful.
Stars and whales sing of it; your breathing proclaims it.
My grace is in it; my hands are beneath it all,
and you belong to it, even as you are,
though you can never know this mystery,
your part in this wonder and blessing.

My dread is small, even all our death;
God's goodness is infinite. Praise.
