  FROM THE RECTOR

Wow! What a wonderful send off you gave me on Sunday!! The lunch was delicious and your words, gifts and cards mean so much to me. I am so grateful for all of you, and especially to those who planned my celebration: Jen Huckman, Lois Brady, Bev Hammond, Val May, Patti Rau, Becky Riley, Lisa Thompson, and Alys and Ray Walker. What a lot of planning went into this, not to mention time and effort.  I can’t imagine how it could have been any better. And thank you to all of you who spoke, either as part of returning the gifts or from the floor. What a gift your words were, and are to me! It was such a joyous occasion, and I will remember it always.

I am so blessed to have served among you for the past 6 ½ years. The time has flown by, and I can’t believe I’m now down to my last few days in the office. It has been such a joy and privilege to be your rector, and I have not only loved it, but have grown both personally and in my ministry. You have been so wonderful and loving to me, and I am so grateful.

The ending of my sermon on Sunday expresses my feelings as I leave you, so I repeat those words here:

God is with you, leading you, guiding you, and supporting you every step of the way.  Coming to the end of my time here is so bittersweet. I have loved being your priest and pastor, and part of me doesn’t want to leave at all, or say goodbye. I will think of you so often, and wonder how everything is going, and how you all are doing. I will miss you more than I can say.

You will be in my prayers always, and in God’s hands. Thank you for all of your support,

your faithful dedication and your love. I am so grateful. Know that I love you, and will carry you in my heart. And finally, in the words of our closing hymn, “God be with you ‘til we meet again.”

 With love and gratitude,

Caroline

The CDC places Carroll County in the LOW range for Covid community spread. Masks are not required (but are welcomed!) and the section across from the choir is reserved for those who wish to sit with others who are masked.  We will have coffee hour after the service unless Carroll County is ranked in the high range.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

From the Hebrew Bible we hear the story of creation of the first man and woman in the Garden of Eden and their disobedience and consequent loss of innocence. Tempted by the serpent, first the woman and then the man eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The story expresses the understanding the human beings are the crown of God's creation, and yet there is something tragically wrong with them. From later Christian perspective, however, this transgression is seen  as part of God's greater plan for the maturity and salvation of humanity. The free choice of disobedience and the learning of good and evil will, through redemption make possible a more profound relationship with God.
A psalm of thanksgiving for the forgiveness of sin.

In this lesson Paul tells how the history of human sinfulness  and death has been transformed by the free gift of Jesus Christ.  The act of disobedience of the one person, Adam, began the reign of sin and death. This was later compounded by the role of law which, by instructing people not to sin, actually caused trespassing to abound. But now the righteousness and obedience  of the one man Jesus Christ means acquittal  and new life for all.

Our gospel is the story of the temptation of Jesus by the devil. After his baptism Jesus is led into the wilderness and confronted with temptations which are inescapable in his ministry. He might seek to show that he is the Son of God by satisfying material needs or wielding miraculous power. Or he could seek to control allegiance through the pomp and might of a worldly kingship. But Jesus' obedience is God's way for him.

"Praying"

It doesn't have to be

the blue iris, it could be

weeds in a vacant lot, or a few

small stones; just

pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don't try

to make them elaborate, this isn't

a contest but the doorway

into thanks, a silence in which

another voice may speak.
