Welcome back to all of our summer parishioners!
It is wonderful to see our numbers swell on Sunday morning, and to meet all of you whose names I’ve been hearing over the winter and seeing in our directory. I met a few of you last September when I began my ministry here, but most of you were already gone. This is one of the joys of St. Andrew’s – that instead of our attendance dropping during the summer as people go on vacation or to a cabin for the weekend, ours increases! We are so glad you’re back!

Funeral for Kathie Johnson
Kathie Johnson, one of our faithful summer parishioners of many years, died on May 26, 2017. A memorial service was held in Greenville, SC, where she lived most recently. Her funeral will be at St. Andrew’s on Monday, August 28 at 1:00 pm with burial in the Memorial Garden. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall, and all are welcome to attend.

-                   SEARCH COMMITTEE                  -
“The (parish) profile serves as the parish’s introduction to potential candidates.  At its best, the profile uses images and words to describe the personality, mission, ministry, and ministers of the parish; and denotes the passion and gifts for ministry it seeks in its next Rector.”                        (2017 Search Committee Handbook, Diocese of NH)
SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
House Meeting Sunday July 16th.
See more pictures in the gallery below.
These are some of the things we learned from the nearly fifty (yes, 50! You “heard” me right!) of us who participated in the group discussion meetings in preparation for the Parish Profile.  We confirmed that we are a warm, welcoming, and loving parish who take care of each other and those in the wider community.  We also found out that there are some things that folks would REALLY like to do differently.
We’ll talk about all of this on Sunday, July 23rd, at the coffee hour following the 10:00 o’clock service.  Please come with more questions and comments and share anything you didn’t get to say before then!

-            COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER           -

The Food Pantry thanks you for your contributions throughout the year.
The monthly item for JULY is dish detergent and a special request for Jello which is a popular summer item.
-                  FOOD FOR THOUGHT                -
Christ gives himself to us as the strong bread. In the rich, dense, chewy texture of our sacred text. In the bread and wine of the Eucharistic feast. In all occasions of joy and gladness and celebration. In all occasions of healing and new life. It’s what we were made for. And, having come to God’s feast for all people, the next thing to do is to make sure all are fed.

-       FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY      -
THURSDAY, July 20
Mark 3:2 They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.

I don’t have any interest in abiding by unnecessary rules—rules that exist for their own sake. I believe that the spirit of Sabbath is that on one day, we take a nice rest, just as God rested after the work of creation. For some of us, Monday may be our day of rest rather than Sunday. Some of us work seven days a week and set aside some portion of the days for rest, prayer, reflection, and relaxation. I think God understands.

I can feel Jesus’ disappointment in how the Pharisees display self-righteous indignation. These are the men who dogmatically enforce and interpret the laws of the scripture, but they miss the true spirit of the commandments. It’s hard to comprehend that the Pharisees are chastising Jesus for healing a man—just because it was the wrong day on the calendar. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

Jesus says that fulfilling the entirety of the law hangs on two actions—loving God with our whole selves, more than we love anything else, and loving our neighbor with the same affection and care with which we love ourselves. Neither of these are complicated tasks, but they are awfully hard to master.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider making a donation of nonperishable food items or toiletries to a food pantry in your community today.
