FROM THE RECTOR
This week feels like the first time I’ve had in ages to sit back and reflect on all that has happened in the past few months. June is a bit of a blur – I went to my sister’s in Maryland for my niece, Grace’s high school graduation the first week of June, and when I came back spent the next week finalizing plans, finishing the bulletin and taking care of last minute details for our Celebration of New Ministry. The day after the celebration I drove to upstate New York to pick up my younger niece, Caroline, and brought her back here the next day. She was with me for ten days while my sister dealt with a myriad of things related to moving, a new job and meeting Grace back in MD when she returned from Europe. In the midst of that there was also, the new roof and application for the loan from the Diocese, and then taking Caroline back to NY and helping my sister settle into her new home. Oh, and Betsy’s ordination to the priesthood! It was a busy time!

Now that my trips and the celebrations are over, we’ve been approved for the loan, pledges for Raise the Roof are beginning to come in, and we’re almost at the point of scheduling the work on the roof, life is slowing down to a more normal pace. And with that I have been thinking back on the Celebration of New Ministry. The exchange of the symbolic gifts was so meaningful to me, both giving and receiving. And much of that was captured in the pictures my friend Mike Yergeau took (see the gallery of pictures at the end of today’s Memo for some of those). But most meaningful are two of the prayers, reproduced below. They are reminiscent of both our baptismal vows and ordination vows. The first is the prayer that I prayed alone while kneeling at the altar rail, and the second is what we all prayed in response. They capture the heart of what we are called to do and be through Christ. The prayer that I prayed is a powerful prayer of commitment, both to God and to you, and reflecting on it brings tears to my eyes. Know that I have been praying it daily, and that I will continue to do so as long as I am your Rector.

Faithfully yours,
Caroline

The new Rector may stand in the midst of the people and say
O Lord my God, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; yet you have called your servant to stand in your house; and to serve at your altar. To you and to your service I devote myself, body, soul, and spirit. Fill my memory with the record of your mighty works; enlighten my understanding with the light of your Holy Spirit; and may all the desires of my heart and will center in what you would have me do. Make me an instrument of your salvation for the people entrusted to my care, and grant that I may faithfully administer your holy Sacraments, and by my life and teaching set forth your true and living Word. Be always with me in carrying out the duties of my ministry. In prayer, quicken my devotion; in praises, heighten my love and gratitude; in preaching, give me readiness of thought and expression; and grant that, by the clearness and brightness of your holy Word, all the world may be drawn into your blessed kingdom. All this I ask for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
The members of the congregation remain standing and say together
Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in us the covenant you made with us at our Baptism. Send us forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before us; through Jesus Christ your Son our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Bishop says
Acknowledging the one mission of Jesus our Lord, which we share in unity, let us greet one another in the name of Christ.

RAISE THE ROOF

As of this week beautiful fabric has been generously donated, and a volunteer is getting it ready to be cut into patches. Here is the plan for completing the quilt:

Monday, July 23rd is cutting day. We plan to cut all the pieces and put them into packets, with directions, ready to give to those who will sew patches together into 12 1/2” squares. We will meet at 9:30 in the Parish Hall.

Monday August 27th is assembly day. We will meet in the Parish Hall at 9:30 to sew the 12 1/2” patches into a quilt.

On Monday, September 10th, assuming all is ready, we will put the quilt on the frame and begin quilting, beginning at 9:30 in the Parish hall.

Everyone is invited to help make this happen. If you would like to participate in any way please let Barbara Lord know. Or just come to the Parish Hall on those days and enjoy the fellowship!

Pledge cards for Raise the Roof project can be found
on the back wall bulletin board in the parish hall.

Matthew 26:6-7 Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table.

One of my favorite statements by conservationist John Muir came from his defense of Hetch Hetchy Valley near Yosemite. “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike.”

Muir lost the battle—the valley was flooded to create a reservoir—but the question remains: Would the world be better off if we poured all of our resources into what is “useful,” into what serves a practical purpose? The disciples certainly think so. When the woman with the alabaster jar anoints Jesus, they are incensed. Couldn’t that ointment have been sold and the money given to the poor? Of course—but that’s not the point.
Like Muir, Jesus believes that value isn’t strictly a function of utility. Beauty—including acts of kindness and mercy—is as necessary to the spirit as bread is to the body.

MOVING FORWARD: What represents great beauty and good bread in your life?
