Thursday MEMO for October 31,
All Hollows’ Eve

Daylight Savings Time ends:
REMEMBER TO SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK SATURDAY NIGHT!
(The Sunday 9:00 service will “feel” like 10:00!!!)
This coming Sunday, November 3rd, we will celebrate All Saints’ Day with ONE service only at 9:00 AM. We will begin the liturgy with the reading of names of the departed, beginning with those who have died in the parish this past year, followed by the names of others whom you would like remembered – both people whom you have known personally, as well as public figures of importance to you. If you have not yet turned names in to Debra in the office, you may do so by phone or email to the rector (frantzdale@gmail.com). All Saints’ Day is a principal feast of the church year and we will be joined by trumpeter Randy Ouellette.

The service will be followed by a Celebration Breakfast hosted by the Stewardship Committee. They will provide the meal. Just come and enjoy the gift of good food and parish sociability.

Readings for this coming Sunday: Isaiah 1:10-18; Psalm 149; 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12; Luke 19:1-10.

Thanks to all of you who rolled with the punches last Sunday when we arrived for worship to an unheated church!!! We held the 8:00 service in cozy fellowship in the kitchen, giving thanks for the heat from two ovens. The furnace repairman solved the problem by 10:00, but the church was still in the low 50s, so we opted for worship in the Parish Hall.
Thank you to the Bunker family for hosting Coffee Hour last week, and for their efforts in raising money for the ChIPs project. We brought in close to $300 that will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for children of incarcerated parents, a ministry of the Diocese of New Hampshire.

"Money for Jail.
Kids love their dads.
Dads like to give their kids presents.
Help moms and dads love their kids."

A week from this coming Sunday, on November 10th, we will have as our special guest and preacher Tamara Kittleson-Aldred, the founder of Eleanore’s Project, the organization that Sammie and Carol have been working with that provides customized wheelchairs to children in Peru with mobility handicaps. This will include some special, active involvement activities for our children during a portion of the service.

Harvest Supper & Pie Auction
Friday, November 22nd– Supper 6-7pm followed by Pie Auction

We are looking for helpers on the dinner preparation, serving and cleanup.  Carol Tubman is chairing the dinner portion of the things and she will have a sign-up sheet in the parish hall.  If you want to contact Carol, please call 539-2780.

We also need pies donated for the auction (See the reverse side for information). In recent years you very graciously provided us with beautiful pies of many types, helping to raise well over $1,000.  We hope to have a similar response this year.  Lynne Clough is in charge of this aspect of the event.  Please call her at 323-7046 or email her at littlefarm239@roadrunner.com to let her know what you plan to donate. If you haven’t come to this occasion before, it’s really a lot of fun!  Bring your friends & family too.

Note: Pies should be delivered on the day of the dinner/auction by 3 p.m.
Boughs & Bonbon's Holiday Fair is coming up fast! We are looking for a volunteer or two who would be willing to work on getting vendors signed up for the Holiday Fair.  We do have some vendors who are coming back again this year, but hope to find some new craft people with interesting, salable items that would fit with our overall theme. Contact Lynne Clough or Patti Rau if you can help out in this way.

Grounded in Giving
Pledge update and questions for reflection...

Thank you to those who have pledged for 2014.
Don't forget to open your "door" on our tree poster on the piano for a glimpse at the roots of our faith, our life in the parish and our outreach to the world.

How is giving a response to God's blessings?

How do you experience joy in giving?

How does giving help you to grow into the person God created you to be?

See you in church!

Services for this coming Sunday, the Twenty Third Sunday after Pentecost, will be at 8 and 10 AM. We hope you will join us for worship and fellowship.
This Sunday continues our Fall Pledge Season. Please plan to pick up your pledge packet if you haven’t yet done so, and take time for a close look at the altar frontal created by the Stewardship Committee.

This is also ChIPs Sunday (Children of Incarcerated Parents). Thanks to the Bunker family who will be hosting Coffee Hour and organizing our contribution effort. This project provides Christmas gifts for incarcerated parents to give to their children. Remember those who are in prison.” Hebrew 13:3

Readings for this Sunday: Joel 2:23-32; Psalm 65; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18; Luke 18:9-14.

Last Sunday was our Fall Work Day. Many thanks to the David, Bernice, Carol, Cathie, Patti, Duane, Gretchen, Grete, George, Hettie, Bob, Carolyn, Chris, and Carolyn; and special thanks to George Rau for the great preparation and organization of the work jobs. (Apologies to anyone whose name was overlooked.) It was an energetic, hard-working group!
Are there names you would like to have remembered at the altar during our All Saints’ Day service on November 3rd? Please take one of the sheets for that purpose from the bulletin table or send an email to Debra at office@standrewsinthevalley.org . The sheets can be put in the plate or the office.  All names will be recorded in our “Book of Names.”

There is a Service of Morning Prayer every Wednesday at 9 AM. We hope you will join us for worship and fellowship.

Thanksgiving approaches… The New Hampshire Food Bank is able to provide the Food Pantry with only turkeys this year, so we are making a fervent request for items to help fill our 100 Thanksgiving baskets that go out to local families.  We would greatly appreciate: cans or jars of turkey gravy, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie mix that has spices in it, and 64 ounce containers of apple juice. Or consider a cash contribution; the Food Pantry is able to purchase supplies at wholesale costs. Our deepest thanks to all of you for always supporting our food pantry.

Food for thought on Generosity as we live our 2014 Pledge Season.

Whenever my thoughts turn toward acquisitiveness or stinginess, my shoulders tense up and it feels as if I’m holding my breath. To find a remedy, I don’t have to improve my thoughts, I just need to be generous with them. Then freedom seems to appear automatically.

From the Buddhist writer John Tarrant

See you in church!

Remember the Children of Incarcerated Parents: October is ChIPs month at St. Andrew’s. Last year our parish raised about $500 that was used to purchase Christmas gifts (both toys and books) for children of prisoners, so that these parents have the possibility of giving something to their children. The gifts are presented at holiday parties where each child receives a gift and a book.  Gifts should not exceed $20 retail value, must be new. Some restrictions apply: no jewelry, balloons, crayons, play dough, glue, bubbles, long sticks, knitting needles, glass items, clothing, sharp tools, or toy weapons of any kind.
If you prefer to contribute financially, make the check out to Saint Andrew’s with “ChIPs Project” in the memo line. The deadline is Friday, November 1st, so that our delegates can hand them on to the organizers at Diocesan Convenention.

The Annual Ingathering of our United Thank Offering boxes is coming up. (We turn them in at Diocesan convention on November 1.) If you need a blue box, please pick one up in the Parish Hall. Drop a coin in daily as you give thanks for the blessings of the day. UTO boxes and/or check donations must be turned in by Sunday, October 27. Please make checks payable to St. Andrew’s with UTO in the memo line.

Are there names you would like to have remembered at the altar during our All Saints’ Day service on November 3rd? 2013 Sandwich Fair, St. Andrew's Booth
Many thanks to everyone who made our booth at the Sandwich Fair such a success! Special thanks go to Carol, Gretchen, and David for putting in long hours and leadership, to Robert Behr, who designed and constructed our handsome structure, and to each of you who staffed the booth, made jams, baked, and offered your artistic creativity for the amazing gourds, as well as purchasers of our goods. We brought in over $2,200 in support of the church. More pictures below.

Food for thought on Gratitude as we begin our 2014 Pledge Season.

The prayer of thanksgiving frees us from the bondage of our own too-small worlds. It lifts us beyond ourselves and our petty preoccupations. And it does not come naturally to any of us. Rather, paradoxically, like all prayer, thanksgiving is a gift, from God, for us, waiting to be received.         Br. Kevin Hackett, SSJE

Xena's Blessing
We had a wonderful gathering for the Blessing of the Animals last Sunday – lots of dogs, a cat, a buddy, and a bucket of worms!!! See below for pictures of some of the dogs of Saint Andrew’s. Once again we all worshipped in peace, interspersed with the gentle jingle of collar tags. – truly a peaceable kingdom. Thank you, Val, for providing snacks for the dogs and to Pastoral Care for keeping the humans pleasingly fed. See more pet pictures below.

Answer to last week's Bible Trivia:
What book in the Bible (well, the Apocrypha) has a geniune, tail-wagging dog? The Book of Tobit!

Familiar food for thought from Mary Oliver,
as the days shorten and the air cools…
Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountain and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clear blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
See you in church!
Blessings,
Heidi +

You and your pets are invited to…

The Blessing of the Animals this coming Sunday, October 6th!  ONE Service only at 9 AM. Dogs should be on leashes, and cats and other small creatures in crates. Yes, your animal will sit with you in church. Our animals are a blessing to us every day. Now it’s their turn to receive a blessing. We do this in recognition of the Feast Day of Saint Francis (October 4), as a celebration of the special place our animals have in the richness of our lives. If your animal is too unruly or anti-social, feel free to bring a picture instead – or your favorite stuffed animal! We will also remember animals that have died in the past year. (Large animals will be blessed at the front steps immediately following the service at about 10:15.) And don’t forget to invite you human friends as well. Coffee Hour following the service will be hosted by the Pastoral Care Committee.
All God’s critters have a place in the choir!
Readings for this Sunday: Lamentations 1:1-6; Psalm 137; 2 Timothy 1:1-14; Luke 17:5-10.

Adult acolytes and eucharistic ministers (LEMs): It’s time to brush up on what we do and why we do it. We will be holding two refresher/training sessions on Saturday, October 5 and Saturday, October 19 from 9:00 to noon. We will begin with Morning Prayer, followed by breakfast (so no need to eat first) then the training. The expectation is that everyone who serves will attend one of these sessions. Please let Lisa know which session you will be attending so that we can plan accordingly. It is quite likely that we will finish well before noon.
Have you ever thought about serving as an acolyte or a chalice-bearer? Consider yourself invited to this training session. This rewarding ministry is open to anyone with a desire to serve and a willingness to learn.

There is a Service of Morning Prayer every Wednesday at 9 AM. We hope you will join us for worship and fellowship.

The Sandwich Fair opens in a week – October 12-14!!!! The success of our booth depends on what we sell and sufficient staffing of our booth. The signup list for booth-tenders is near the kitchen door in the Parish Hall. Workers are needed for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings, 7:30 to 10:30. Please help out. We're counting on you!

There are hard copies of recipes for pumpkin, apple, oatmeal, and gingerbread whoopie pies on the podium in the parish hall.  Lynne can also supply a recipe via e-mail; request one by writing to littlefarm239@roadrunner.com.  Contributors need to contact Carol Tubman at cctubman@msn.com about preserves or Lynne Clough at littlefarm239@roadrunner.com about baked goods.  Lynne has collected many recipes for different types of whoopie pies and is happy to share them. Recipes are by the kitchen in the Parish Hall. The standard chocolate with vanilla cream filling did not sell as well as the fall-flavored ones, such as pumpkin and gingerbread.

Carol will be preparing labels for all food products, so she will need to be e-mailed a list of ingredients and quantities of whatever will be contributed.

Bible Trivia …
There are many different breeds of animals that are mentioned in the Bible, but only one book mentions a dog as a companion. Which book – actually it’s in the Apocrapha – has a genuine, tail-wagging pet dog?   (Answer will appear next week.)

See you in church!
