October 25, 2012

Services for this coming Sunday, the 28th of October, the Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost will be at 8 and 10 AM.  Please join us for coffee hour following the service.

Readings for this Sunday: Job 42:1-6, 10-17; Psalm 34:1-8, 19-22; Hebrews 7:23-28.

Morning Prayer every Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Are there names you would like to have remembered at the altar during All Saints’ Day service on November 4th?  Please take one of the sheets from the bulletin table this Sunday and place the returned sheet in the plate or the office.  You may also drop an email to Debra with your names. Email: office@standrewsinthevalley.org.

Last Sunday, helping hands with Fall cleanup was appreciated.  George followed up on Wednesday with cleaning the clutter from the “narthex shed.”  He took a whole pickup load to the dump and made easy access to the snowblower, the swinging sign and dinner bell sign.

We hope you will join us for a Saint Andrew's Harvest Supper and Pie Auction, to be held on Friday evening, November 16th. Tickets will be available at the door. Plan to come and invite your friends.! It is hoped that many of you will bake delicious pies (pies that can be frozen for Thanksgiving feasts are especially welcome) to be auctioned following the meal, beginning at about 7:30pm.

Note: Pies should be delivered on the day of the dinner/auction by 3 p.m.

Looking ahead: It is with great joy that you are invited to the Baptism of Connor, Albert, and Melissa, the Bunker children, on Sunday, November 25th, the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Their baptism will also be the celebration of their formal adoption by Kathy and Alan. We want to let you know, so that you might plan accordingly. Please be present to part of the congregation as we pledge our support to these three remarkable children (and their parents) and welcome them "into the household of God!"

Yikes! Our annual Boughs & Bonbons Christmas Fair is only a little more than a month away – Saturday, Dec. 1st.  This year, the committee is hoping to enlist the help of “many hands” to prepare the decorations for the approximately 60 wreaths that are such a popular part of our Fair.  On Monday, November 5th at 7:00 pm there will be a decorations prep party at the church (to include dessert/coffee).  And, since wreath decorations are fairly pricey, we are hoping that you can bring “no-longer-being-used” embellishments you have on hand as well as any natural materials  (pinecones, acorns, branches, mosses, lichens, etc) that you might find in your backyard or on a walk through the woods.  This should be a fun way to get us in the holiday spirit.  Hope you can join us. ~The Christmas Fair Committee~
Please contact co-chairs Lynne Clough (323-7046) or Patti Rau (367-8223) with  questions or offers of help.  Let’s make this Boughs & Bonbons the best ever!

Celebrating and thanking Bishop Gene Robinson. The ticket reservation deadline has been extended. Please let Rev. Heidi know by Sunday if you plan to attend.

*All Saints’ Church, Littleton: Saturday, November 3 from 2 to 4
*Grapone Center, Concord: Saturday, November 10 from 1 to 4

Food for thought from Lynne Twist’s book, The Soul of Money

A reflection on the experience of sufficiency by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore…

I lived on the shady side of the road
and watched my neighbors’ gardens
across the way reveling in the sunshine,
I felt I was poor,
and from door to door went with my hunger.

The more they gave me
from their careless abundance,
the more I became aware of my beggar’s bowl.

Till one morning I awoke from my sleep
at the sudden opening of my door,
and you came and asked for alms.

In despair I broke the lid of my chest open
and was startled into finding
my own wealth.

 See you in church!
Blessings, Heidi+

Food for thought from Br. Curtis Almquist SSJE as we begin our Fall Stewardship season:

You might want to take a tour through your home and intentionally acknowledge your stewardship of the material things to which you’ve been entrusted. That you belong to God, and these things belong to God, and that when God is ready to redistribute these things, you stand ready, not reluctant, but ready, by God’s grace, to give it up.

See you in church!
Blessings, Heidi+

The Blessing of the Animals will be this Sunday, the 14th of October, the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost. Plan on bringing your pet(s) to church for either the 8 AM or 10 AM service.  Please have dogs on a leash and other creatures in a cage. We will reserve the transept as an “animal free zone.”  We hope you'll join us for worship and fellowship. Join us for coffee hour following the service. (Dog snacks will be provided, thanks to Val May.)

Readings for this Sunday: Job 23:1-9, 16-17; Psalm 22:1-15; Hebrews 4:12-16; Mark 10:17-31.

Morning Prayer every Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Pick up your UTO boxes in the Parish Hall and drop a coin in daily. UTO boxes and/or check donations must be turned in by Sunday, October 21st. Please make checks payable to St. Andrew’s with UTO in the memo line.

This year the children of the parish will be helping with the ChIPs program (Children of Incarcerated Parents) by encouraging you to contribute and by being the purchasers of the gifts! If you would like to make a contribution, please make checks payable to Saint Andrew’s with ChIPs in the memo line by October 21st.

Plan ahead for Parish Fall Work Day! Next Sunday, October 21, will be our Fall Work Day. There will be a task list posted. Strong, able-bodied workers: Please bring your lawn rakes and work gloves. Among other chores, we need to rake up our leaves.

A message from our Community Food Pantry: The need is up (and growing as the temperature outside drops), but both cash and food donations are down. Let’s reinstitute the practice bringing something for the Food Pantry Basket every Sunday. If each of us did that every week, that would be about 50 items each Sunday. It would make a HUGE difference to our neighbors who are in need.

Facilities update; Refinishing of the front doors is underway.  From the distance the doors look pretty handsome but a closer look shows why they urgently needed attention.  The refinishers took the doors offsite to work on them so there is a temporary door in place to keep the front entrance usable.

Many thanks to the many hands who helped in another successful year at Sandwich Fair.

Food for thought from Brother Curtis Almquist  SSJE

Conversion is about our ongoing invitation from God to change, to grow into maturity in this life, “to the measure of the full stature of Christ,” who himself changed, his own heart of love broken wide for the whole world.

See you in church!

Blessings, Heidi+

Facilities update; your building maintenance dollars at work: Refinishing of the front doors is underway.  Getting the old finish off is turning out to be a challenge. If anyone can loan a belt sander, let us know. If you're an experienced sander and could put in an hour or two, let us know that. And if you have tips – such as a favorite varnish-remover product to recommend, that would help too.  Thanks!  – Duane (367-8336)
Re-pointing of the stonework will begin soon, so don't surprised if you see scaffolding on the west face of the church. Gary Jones (Jones Brick & Stone) and an assistant will be doing the work. If you look carefully at the angled buttress nearest to the parish hall entry, you'll see why this is an urgent need. (Count the cracks; some of them actually run through some of the stones!)
Thanks for your ongoing support!

Food for thought from Buddhist writer and practitioner David Brazier . . .
We depend through the whole of life on the support of others—upon the natural world, upon other people, and, spiritually, upon the tradition of wisdom that has come down to us through human history. . . Our dependency is not a cause for despair but rather leads to a sense of wonderment and gratitude, which is the moving force of true spirituality.

See you in church!

Blessings, Heidi+
