Thursday MEMO on Friday
The Second Day of Christmas, Boxing Day, The Feast of St. Stephen

Don’t miss the Christmas picture gallery below!
We will have ONE service this coming Sunday, December 28th, at 10 o’clock. This will be a Festival of Lessons & Carols and Eucharist – a time to immerse ourselves in the Christmas story in word and song as we continue to celebrate this season of light and joy!
We will also be honoring June and George Donovan with a reception following the service on the occasion of their 70th wedding anniversary! Thank you to Elaine & Brooks, Joan Wright, and Gretchen, along with the Donovan family for hosting the reception.
Christmas at Saint Andrew’s: Even the rain didn’t keep people away on Christmas Eve! Members, families, and friends squeezed in for our 5 PM Inter-generational Service as the children helped in the retelling the Christmas story. At midnight, the deep darkness of the hour was broken by the glow of candlelight, the resonance of trumpet, organ, and song, and the richness of warmth and love.
And on Christmas morning yet another congregation gathered – sunshine flooding in – as we celebrated with joy the mystery of the Incarnation. Then the party continued with a Christmas Feast for 75!
My deep thanks to God, and to all whose love, faithfulness, and generosity of time and talent made the combined celebration so welcoming to so many friends old and new!  Special thanks to the choir and musicians, the altar guild, those assisting at the altar, and to Carol and her amazing team for the Christmas Feast. You are all a blessing to this church and the world!

See you in church!
Blessings, Heidi+

Special Tuesday Edition

Two days ago (to quote our entry hymn), we "made our house fair as we were able, trimmed the hearth and set the table.” And now we are ready. “Love, the guest, is on the way!”  (WLP 724)
Thank you to everyone who made our preparations so joyful!

Don't miss the album of photos at the bottom from the Greening of the Church last Sunday

A Christmas Prayer from O Come, Emmanuel: a Musical Tour of Daily Readings for Advent and Christmas, by Gordon Giles:
Glory to you, heavenly Father, for in Christ you have cast away our fear and, by your angels, have brought to us a hope of goodwill among all nations. Keep watch over us, the sheep of you pasture, and lead us into all peace until that day when, with angers and archangels, we will sing your praises in the highest heaven, where you reign, with the Spirit and the Son, Jesus Chris our Lord. Amen.

See you in church!
Christmas Blessings and Love,

4th Advent, December 21, 2014:
The Greening of the Church for Christmas

December 18, 2014

Receive the light of Christ!
See picture Gallery below

There will be ONE service, at 10 AM, this coming Sunday, December 21st, the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the Greening of the Church, at which, within the liturgy, we prepare the church for Christmas. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who will be out of town for the actual Christmas holiday to share in the joys of the season here at home. In the words of the familiar hymn, “People, look East, the time is near, of the crowning of the year! Make your house fair as you are able! Trim the hearth and set the table! Love, the guest, is on the way! This service has become quite a treasured tradition here. Come, be part of it!
The readings for this Sunday are 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16, Psalm 132:8-15, Romans 16:25-2, Luke 1:26-38.
Want to lend in hand in preparation for The Greening? We need a variety of cut greens – spruce, pine, balsam, box – to decorate the window ledges of the church and for the “pew end swags.” A team will gather at 9:00 Saturday morning in the Prince Room to do the swags, so we need the greens by them and would welcome you to help if you’d like. Please email or call Heidi+ (367-8220) Friday if you have greens to provide.  The Altar Guild thanks you.
Last chance to make donations to Christmas Flowers. Any amount gratefully received, given “in memory of” or “in thanksgiving for”. Envelopes are in the pews and on the bulletin table. All info needs to be to Debra at the office (323-8515) by Tuesday if it is to be listed in the Christmas bulletin insert. (And thank you to those who have done so already.)
Thank you to all who made last Sunday’s visit by our bishop such a joy: the choir, Preston (who was baptized), Dan (who was received), the altar guild for preparing the church, the heroic Hospitality Team (headed by Sally and Carol), all of you who contributed food for the table, and all whose presence, prayer, and songs of praise filled this place with warmth, love, and spirit. Thank you, Bp. Rob, for being with us!
Bishop’s Discretionary Fund: All “loose plate” money offered last weekend, along with contributions in the designated envelopes, has been directed to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund. If you did not contribute and would like to, it’s not too late! Just designate it in the memo line of your check.
Saint Andrew’s Christmas Feast!!! You are invited to be part of the magic! Each year something of a miracle takes place under our roof in the form of a bounteous true Christmas Feast to which everyone is invited – about 70 parishioners, Dinner Bell regulars, and folks from the area who want a good, wholesome Christmas feast! God works wonders through the work of many (most especially Carol) and the generosity of many. The guests who feast at our table(s) often bring something, but others graciously provide food or cash even though they celebrate their own family feast at home.
A strong team has already volunteered for clean-up. Could you contribute a cheese and cracker plate or other appetizer? Or maybe a dessert? We will have two turkeys, as well as a roast beef; would you like to volunteer to roast one (unstuffed) bird in your oven and bring it over? Or consider making a financial contribution to this amazing annual event? Call the office (323-8515) if you’d like to make a reservation.
The Feast is preceded by a simple Christmas Morning Eucharist at 11:30. The feasting begins at 12:30!
Gratitude from The Sandwich Singers and Peggy Johnson, director: We had a packed house for the concert here on Wednesday evening. Peggy thanks us for so generously hosting the concert “in this wonderful space.” All who attended were gifted with music inviting “the listener to ponder the natural and historical mysteries, and to meditate on the unexpected ways in which great and small mysteries surround us, our lives, and our loved ones.” The concert included two commissioned pieces – a suite by Kyle Quirion, a senior music ed. major at Plymouth State, and a new carol by Jonathan Santori, Plymouth State music professor. Both were settings of poetry by Peggy Johnson.
Food for thought as we move from Advent to Christmas…
As we come to the moment in the year when the days again begin to lengthen, encouraging us in our lives to leave darkness behind and move toward that greater light that has come into the world, I offer three verses from a hymn, sung at the concert on Wednesday, by John Keble (1792-1866)…

 New every morning is the love our wakening and uprising prove;
through sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life and power and thought.
New mercies, each returning day, around us hover while we pray;
new perils past, new sins forgiven, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be, as more of heaven in each we see;
some soften gleam of love and prayer shall dawn on every cross and care
The trivial round, the common task, will furnish all we ought to ask;
room to deny ourselves; a road to bring us daily nearer God
See you in church.
Advent Blessings!

Commissioning from Last Sunday
There will be ONE service, at 10 AM, this coming Sunday, December 14th, the Third Sunday of Advent and the Biennial visitation of our bishop, the Rt. Rev. A. Robert Hirschfeld. This is an important time for the whole parish to come together, so that we can get to know him and he can get to know us. He will also be baptizing Preston Mills and receiving Dan Micciulla into this branch of Christ’s church. Plan to join us after the service as well to greet the Bishop during coffee hour and to take part in an open discussion toward the end of coffee hour.

The readings for this Sunday are Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11, Psalm 126, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24, John 1:6-8. 19-28.

We count on the parish to fund our Christmas poinsettias and laurel roping and welcome contributions of any size given “in memory of” or “in thanksgiving for”. Envelopes are in the pews and on the bulletin table.

The service in celebration of the life of Ruth Conley (Juli Hird’s grandmother) will be this Saturday, December 13th, at 1:30.

Looking ahead…On the 4th Sunday of Advent, December 21st, we will again have a single service at 10:00 for the Greening of the Church, at which, within the liturgy, we prepare the church for Christmas.

In spite of the weather, there was a considerable turnout for the Christmas Fair.  A wonderful soup lunch was served this year and was a big hit!  Many thanks to all who helped in the many ways it takes to make this event successful.  It could not be done without you and you are very much appreciated. Carol, David, Chris M, (chief organizers and Price Room decorators); Duane, Beverly, Duane, Heidi (signage and publicity); Sales people: Gretchen, Dan, Gina, Courtney, Preston, Beverly, Judy, Peg; the wreath decorators, headed up by Barbara; the amazing kitchen team for the lunch: soup cooks Dale and Elaine, George (our bread-baker), Sarah (our server), and cleanup team: Jen, Tom, Tim, Sarah, and Grete, along with others; and to those whose booths added variety, delight, and income to our event: Val, Barbara, Carolyn B, Peg’s friend Audrey, Doreen, Betty,  Trish, Janet, Sally, Liz, and Gretchen; along with all of you who baked cookies, posted fliers, invited friends, and … yes … all of you who made purchases.

There are still a number of wreaths in search of homes!!! Decorated and plain. We’d like to at least cover costs, so stop by soon and name your price!

Report from Outreach Conversation: About a dozen of us gathered after last Sunday’s service to discuss and recommend to the Vestry those organizations we as a parish would like to support through our year-end outreach and mission giving – the funds having been raised through our various events over the course of 2014. The final dollar amount will be determined once all expenses and payments related to the Fair have been received, but it is expected to be in excess of $4,000. Strong support continues for organizations that support the development needs of children, locally, regionally, and globally, as well as support for healthy parenting. We talked about the distinction between development/transformational efforts (“teach people to fish; they eat for a lifetime”) vs. direct, charitable giving (“give people a fish; they eat for a day”), recognizing the need for both. We reviewed the UN Millennium Development Goals and saw ways in which our giving supports some of these goals, but we also observed that we have not been explicitly involved with any programs relating to environmental sustainability and thought that would be an important potential focus for inquiry, discussion, and future support. The newsprint lists from the discussion are posted in the Parish Hall. The Vestry will fine-tune the suggestions and the amounts and will report back to the congregation. Thanks to all who contributed to the discussion AND all who have given generously in support of our FUN-Raising events.

The Sandwich Singers Christmas concerts are an annual highlight of the season. This year the Tamworth concert will be at Saint Andrew’s on Wednesday, December 17, at 7:30 PM. The Sandwich concert will be this Sunday evening, December 14, also at 7:30 at the Methodist Meeting House in Center Sandwich. Enrich your season of celebration and enjoy the offerings of the five St. Andrew’s folks that sing with this group.

Food for thought in this Advent season…

I hope I’m not alone in following the daily email “Advent Calendar” from the brothers at SSJE. Each morning in my in-bin is a word to reflect on for the day – along with an evocative photograph and a few sentences from one of the brothers to get my ”reflective juices” going. Tuesday’s word was RESPOND.

Brother Jim writes: As big as God is, our conversations will sometimes begin in the simplest of ways….through the beauty of a flower or a strain of a Beethoven symphony. It could be through the cry of an infant or an epiphany that is born out of sheer silence. All we have to do is listen to how God is beginning the conversation and we will then know how to respond.

What circumstances have caused you to pause for a moment (or an hour)?
How have you responded this week?
Could it be that in that moment God was reaching out to you?
How does that perspective change what you make of that moment and your response?

See you in church.
Advent Blessings!

December 4, 2014

There will be ONE service, at 9 AM, this coming Sunday, December 7th and the Second Sunday of Advent. As we do each year on the first Sunday in December, we will be commissioning all licensed lay ministers during the liturgy. This is an opportunity for the congregation to recognize those who faithfully assist at the altar and provide visits to homebound members and to offer their prayers of support. The service will be followed by coffee hour hosted by Vestry.

The readings for this Sunday are Isaiah 40:1-11, Psalm 85:7-13, 2 Peter 3:8-15a, Mark 1:1-8
Annual Outreach Discussion: At about 10:30 on Sunday, all who are interested are invited to gather for our annual outreach discussion. This is the opportunity for us as a parish to review the organizations that we have supported in the past, consider new organizations, and make recommendation to the Vestry. We have a strong history of support for organizations in which members of the parish take an active role, so if you have quietly been being the heart and hands of Christ in the world and would recommend that the parish provide some additional support, your suggestions would be welcome. Please come prepared to speak briefly and accurately about that project.
We currently have a parish policy that 50% of the proceeds from most of our fundraisers is directed towards mission and outreach. This year, assuming the Christmas Fair goes well, that means we will have about $3,500 to give. Come, be part of the conversation and enjoy participating in this corporate act of generosity.

The Christmas Fair at Saint Andrew’s … countdown to 9AM Saturday!!!  Wreath decorating is taking place today (Thursday). Cookies, candies, jams, and jellies are due by 3:00 on Friday. We hope you are spreading the word to you friends and plan to lend a hand in some way. Gorgeous wreaths, a variety of guest and “home-team” craft vendors, and lots of good pre-Christmas spirit!
New special addition this year: Chowder lunch served in the Prince Room.
We’ll be going til 3:00 this year, so clean-up helpers: please show up around 2:30!

The service in celebration of the life of Ruth Scott Conley will held at Saint Andrew's on Saturday, December 13 at 1:30. Ruth is the great-grandmother of Aislin and Ronan Hird and the grandmother Juli Hird. She and her late husband, Ray Conley, were married at Saint Andrew's in the mid 1950s.

A prayer request and some information from Davis and Andrea Dassori, whose lives have recently been turned upside down. Davis writes: Andrea and I saw her doctor [three] weeks ago because of some troubling symptoms. We learned that there was a mass in her brain, and a week later she underwent surgery to remove it. As anticipated, it turned out to be a glioblastoma, fortunately located so that, unlike Ted Kennedy's tumor, it was possible to remove all of it. With that particular type of cancer removal, while encouraging, it is far from the end of the story; but so far everything else has gone just as well as we could possibly have hoped.
If you would like to send notes of support and keep posted on Andrea’s recovery more information and background are in a blog Davis has been keeping, which you can find it at www.caringbridge.org/visit/andreadassori Her progress is very encouraging, and they look forward to seeing us soon in New Hampshire.
Andrea, we’re holding you close in our prayers!
Women’s Lunch Bunch Christmas Special!!! The past several years we have gathered at someone’s home for a December pot-luck meal together. This year Judy Ward, a friend of the parish and a regular “lunch-buncher,” has invited us to her house at 100 Deer Drive, Silver Lake. Directions will be available at church on Sunday. We’ll gather at noon. Please bring something to for the table.

December calendar reminders:
On the 3rd Sunday of Advent, December 14th, our Bishop, Rob Hirschfeld, will be with us for his biennial parish visit to baptize, confirm, receive, preach, celebrate, and visit with us. We will have ONE service only at 10 o’clock. Please mark your calendars and do your best to be with us that Sunday as we welcome him to Saint Andrew’s and share the Advent season with him.

On the 4th Sunday of Advent, December 21st, we will again have a single service at 10:00 for our Greening of the Church liturgy, at which, within the liturgy, we prepare the church for Christmas. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who will be out of town for the actual Christmas holiday to share in the joys of the season here at home.

Food for thought, in the form of a unique Advent Calendar from the brothers at SSJE (the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts). We’re all familiar with Advent calendars in which you open a door each day to get a little picture or a scripture verse as we approach Christmas. Allow yourself to be “prepared” for God’s gift to us with the Incarnation. This year, the Brothers at SSJE will send, directly to your email inbox, a link to an evocative image accompanied by a single word, followed by a brief reflection. There are interactive possibilities as well if you sleuth around at the end of the mailing. The email will arrive by 5 AM, so it’ll be right there for you to ponder and reflect on through the day…Maybe even take pictures of your own that reflect the word of the day!

Today’s word: Thrive.
We were made for ‘Yes’. The arts and sports are about not merely surviving in this world, but thriving. He said that he came that we might have life—and have it abundantly. We were made for senseless acts of beauty—and fun!” [Br. Mark Brown]

See you in church.
Advent Blessings!
