Exodus 33:22 And while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

My favorite stories in the Bible are the ones that take place between rocks and hard places, when the glory of God shows up in ways we cannot mistake for anything other than revelatory. Moses, Elijah, Ezekiel, Peter, John, and Mary (to name just a few) have stories to tell about how every single time they thought there was nowhere to go, no hope left, no real chance of the story playing out well, the holy and wholly impossible was made manifest.

We are in good company when we find ourselves in tight spaces, asking hard questions or giving hard answers or trying to muddle our way between choices we’d rather not contemplate at all. May we find the courage to wait and see the glory of the Lord revealed to us most vividly in the hard places.

MOVING FORWARD: When has God shown up in your own tight spots? Share your story with us by using #ForwardDayByDay.

FROM THE RECTOR

REMEMBER THIS TIME LAST YEAR, when the Fourth Sunday of Advent was also Christmas Eve? That made for a really busy Sunday! A morning service for 4 Advent, and then Christmas Eve services at 5:00 and 11:00.

This year Christmas Eve is the day after the fourth Sunday of Advent, which is a little better for the Altar Guild, Bernice and the Choir, and those of us who plan liturgy and run copies of bulletins. But it still compresses things for all of us. We come to church on Sunday, and then again on Monday for one (or both) of the Christmas Eve services, and perhaps again on Christmas morning. So once again this year, we really only have three full weeks of Advent. I much prefer the years when we have the full four weeks or Advent, or at least three and a half.

As I said earlier this month, I love Advent and all that it represents: the idea of slowing down, and the sense of embracing short days and long nights as we prepare for the coming of our Savior. I appreciate having closer to four weeks of Advent than three, because it gives me a sense of spaciousness of time, rather than a feeling of being rushed.

But I love Christmas as much as I love Advent. I love the time we come together to worship, the time to be with family and friends, Christmas baking, wrapping presents – all of it! And I love what is a new tradition for me – the St. Andrew’s Christmas Dinner. I am so grateful to all who make this happen. The Huckman’s have organized it in the past several years, and with the help of numerous volunteers, solicited donations from local restaurants, planned the menu, and prepared and served the meal. It is a delicious feast, and it brings a delightful mix of people from the community to St. Andrew’s.

I will drive to my sister’s in Canton, New York on December 26 to celebrate Christmas with my family. With the exception of my adult niece and nephew, we will all be together until December 30. For years we have all gathered in Mississippi at my brother’s, and I’m looking forward to being able to drive this year instead of flying.

I hope that you all will be able to be with family and friends for Christmas this year as well, and if you are alone, that you’ll join us at the St. Andrew’s Christmas Dinner!

May you all have a blessed and joy filled Christmas!

Caroline

Food for Thought:

God, creator of everything, now born of flesh and blood to be with us
Emmanuel, God with us
Hope is ours
Peace is on the way
Sorrow has lost its grip
Love has flooded every heart
Emmanuel, God with us
Light has come into the world
And the darkness of despair, and war, and hurt, and hate shall not overcome it
Tonight you are with us
And we will never be the same
We will be more tender
We will protect the vulnerable
We will stand watch
We will come running to soothe the pain, to befriend the lonely, to lift up the lowly
To live as your people, to walk with you in love
We pray all of this in the name of Emmanuel, God with us
Amen.

Isaiah 10:3 What will you do on the day of punishment, in the calamity that will come from far away? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth?

There’s an early episode of Aaron Sorkin’s masterpiece The West Wing in which one of the senior staff members (Josh) receives special instructions for what to do in case of a major emergency, what we’ve come to call continuity of government. When Josh realizes that no one else he works with has these instructions, he gives his special card back to the president.

If things go sideways, he’d rather be with his friends. That is where his deepest wealth is found, and his desire to help and be helped by them when things are at their worst is what motivates him to decline what others might have viewed as a great honor or huge blessing.

MOVING FORWARD: Do a little research on the idea of privilege. What does this word mean or represent in your life?

FROM THE RECTOR

AND THE WINNER IS….. me! Was that really supposed to happen?! My first thought was, no, I shouldn’t be the one to win this gorgeous quilt. But the response of the people present when my name was drawn assured me that it was okay. Thank you for that! I was so excited, and still am. And as you can see, it is beautiful on my bed (and my cats like it too).
Once again, I want to thank everyone who worked on the quilt. What a great project it was! Barbara Lord had the vision, as well as the knowledge and experience to organize it and make it happen. The project began early in the summer as people began donating material to be used. A large group gathered in late July to cut the material into squares, and the assembly of the pieces and sewing commenced with another gathering in late August. A few weeks later it was ready to put on the quilting frame and was on display on the frame as the quilting began.
So many people were involved I can’t begin to name them all! But over the course of the project they gathered at the church and put in somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 total hours! In the process, a wonderful camaraderie formed among parishioners and members of our communities, and two of them found a new church home in St. Andrew’s.
Raffle tickets went on sale in October, and $1155.00 was raised in total. Through your generosity in the Raise the Roof campaign, the grant awarded by the Tamworth Foundation and fundraising efforts like the quilt and the afghan that was raffled earlier this fall, the cost of the roof was more than covered! This, along with our existing building fund will allows us to move forward with repairs in damaged areas of the ceiling and walls caused by old roof leaks, fresh paint and eventually new flooring in the parish hall and Prince room. Thank you, one and all!
Parish Retreat
There are still a few spaces available for our parish retreat at the monastery of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge, MA. The retreat is from Thursday - Sunday, January 17-20, 2019. See Caroline for more information.

Food for Thought: Wait
Everything in creation requires a time of gestation: canyons took millions of years to be formed by rivers of water; the oldest known Sequoia tree is said to have taken 3,266 years to grow; babies are not ready to be delivered at conception. I would say that it is a part of God’s order to wait.

RAISE THE ROOF

The winner was Rev. Caroline!
The total amount taken in for the raffle was $1,155.00.

Isaiah 7:9b If you do not stand firm in faith, you shall not stand at all.
Every reading in the Daily Office lectionary today says basically the same thing: Set your heart on what God has shown you to be true over and over, and don’t quit. God is doing something amazing.
Living into that truth is complicated. We live out a faith that is counter to the power structures and wants of this world, and we are confronted by this constantly. But what Isaiah, the psalmist, Paul, and Luke are all saying is that they are struggling, just like we are...just like we all do.
God will do just what God says God will do. Our job is to stay out of the way, to set our hearts on reconciliation and love and to know that despite the damage the world is bent on doing, God will make a way. This has always been true. How else do we explain that we are still here, reading these words, hoping in these hopes, and praying to be firm in our faith?

MOVING FORWARD: Read all the lessons for today and see if you think they all point in the same direction.
