CENTERING PRAYER-With
Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast
Please
join us in the sanctuary at 5:30 Tuesday evenings during the month of August for an opportunity to deepen
and/or broaden your prayer life.
Centering Prayer is a simple practice of meditation which focuses on
your personal relationship with God. Whereas you may ‘center’ alone, the
combined energy of a group of people is noteworthy. Thomas Keaton and Richard Rohr are advocates of
quiet prayer, and research has clearly demonstrated its value for adults and
children (Newburg). The Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast will lead us in this prayer
practice. We will end no later than 6:30. No experience is necessary. Come and

FROM THE RECTOR
Raise
the Roof!
As
I write this we are very near signing the final contract with Mike Lord of ML
Construction so that work on the roof can begin. Assuming weather permits, Mike
plans to begin work around August 1. The Vestry has approved a dark bronze
color for the roof, which goes nicely with the color of our building exterior.
Check the Raise the Roof bulletin board in the Parish Hall for a color sample.
Mike will bring us an actual piece of roofing soon, and that will be on display
under the bulletin board.
We
have made good progress in our Raise the Roof campaign. Though we have not yet reached
our goal of $50,000, we are getting close, and we have received a little more
than $23,000 in pledge payments. Because we have already received these pledge
payments on Monday night the Vestry voted to reduce the amount of our loan from
the Diocesan Advance Fund from $50,000 to $30,000. Our loan payments are
reduced to $670.68 per month over 48 months, instead of the original monthly
payment of $909.59 over 60 months. Using the pledge payments already received
and funds from the Capital Projects Fund, we have enough cash on hand to make
the first roof payment of $25,737.50. We will receive the loan check in time to
make the final payment.
We
have received 32 pledges for Raise the Roof, for a total of $40,140. This is a
little over 80% of our pledge goal of $50,000, which is excellent news! Thank
you to all who have made a pledge! But 32 pledges is just over half of our 60 annual
pledges for 2018, so there are still quite a few of you who have not yet made a
pledge. The Vestry has moved ahead with this project believing that we will be
able to raise the needed $50,000. We really had no choice. Just this morning we
had a leak in the rear of the sanctuary. As parishioners, as the community of
faith who gathers at St. Andrew’s in-the-Valley every week to worship, we must
be good stewards of our building so that it continues to be available for those
who come after us. Please, if you have not already, make a pledge to Raise the
Roof. If we all make a contribution, we will easily raise the needed funds. And
to those of you who have already made pledges,again, we thank you for your
generous gifts!

Butler’s
Bridge Closure
The
latest information we have is that Butler’s Bridge, at the intersection Whittier
Rd and Tamworth Rd (Rt. 113), will close next week. Especially since rain has
slowed progress this week, I believe it is safe to expect that it will still be
open this Sunday. Once it closes, the Police Department says that the closure
will last about four weeks. They also caution that the speed limit of 35 mph
will be enforced on roads used for detours, particularly Depot Rd. and Whittier
Rd., so watch your speed. (I find it all to easy to drive over the speed limit

RAISE THE ROOF
As of this week beautiful fabric has been generously donated,
and a volunteer is getting it ready to be cut into patches. Here is the plan
for completing the quilt:
Monday, July 23rd was cutting day.

Monday August 27th is assembly day. We will meet in the
Parish Hall at 9:30 to sew the 12 1/2” patches into a quilt.
On Monday, September 10th, assuming all is ready, we will put the quilt on the frame and begin
quilting, beginning at 9:30 in the Parish hall.
Everyone is invited to help make this happen. If you would like
to participate in any way please let Barbara Lord know. Or just come to the
Parish Hall on those days and enjoy the fellowship!

Romans
15:1-2 We
who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please
ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building
up the neighbor.
I’ve learned a great deal from other teachers I’ve
known. Some have shown me what not to do. But there was also a
professional mentor who continually reminded me that I should never make anyone
look foolish; and many, many years earlier, an elementary school teacher told
me I was a good writer. These two examples showed me not only the importance of
letting a student try and fail and then try again, but also the role a teacher
can play in helping students find their gifts.
Today, the friend who builds me up is one who sets
a new example for me. Though he’s considered one of the leaders in his field,
he’s continually deflecting the spotlight onto others—cheering on younger
scholars and encouraging colleagues, including me.
What my friend and those like him have shown me is
that rather than losing anything by building up others, they are building
themselves up—and the entire community, as well.
