The Good Book Club: Reading Romans during Epiphany

Does reading the Bible every day sound intimidating? Don’t know where to start, how to approach such a practice? The Good Book Club may be for you! Last year during Lent The Good Book Club offered a structure for reading the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. It was so successful that the creators of the program have developed a second offering that began on Monday of this week. This study is on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, and includes weekly reflections, study questions and a gratitude journal. These can be found here: https://www.forwardmovement.org/promotions/PDF/UTO_BibleStudy.pdf
The schedule of daily readings is available here: http://www.goodbookclub.org/readings/
There is also a variety of other resources that accompany the readings, which can be found here: http://www.goodbookclub.org/resources/
Several people have expressed interest in meeting for a simple soup supper and discussion on the materials offered for Romans. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, January 16 at 5:30. We will share a meal, then join in discussion, and end no later than 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome! In order to plan the meals, please let me know if you plan to attend (rectorsaitv@gmail.com). There will also be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.
Even if you can’t join us on Wednesday evening, these resources are designed for individual use as well as groups. I hope you will join us in reading Romans in this season after the Epiphany.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Beannacht: A New Year’s Blessing by John O’Donohue

On the day when
the weight deadens
on your shoulders
and you stumble,
may the clay dance
to balance you.

And when your eyes
freeze behind
the grey window
and the ghost of loss
gets into you,
may a flock of colours,
indigo, red, green
and azure blue,
come to awaken in you
a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays
in the currach of thought
and a stain of ocean
blackens beneath you,
may there come across the waters
a path of yellow moonlight
to bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
may the clarity of light be yours,
may the fluency of the ocean be yours,
may the protection of the ancestors be yours.

And so may a slow
wind work these words
of love around you,
an invisible cloak
to mind your life.

COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER
COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER
The Food Pantry thanks you for your contributions throughout the year.
The monthly item for January is shampoo/conditioner.

The Community Food Center (CFC), which operates out of St. Andrew’s Church on Old Route 25 in Tamworth, is looking for new volunteers to help with this important program.  The Center is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 am to noon for clients to come in and pick up their food. On each of these days, two volunteers staff the Center and a CFC Board Member is on hand to help and answer questions. Scheduling is done bi-monthly and substitutes provide flexibility for volunteers who have other commitments.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY
THURSDAY, January 10, 2019
Psalm 139:22 Search me out, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my restless thoughts.

Homer, a police officer, moved and breathed patience. His report writing was methodical: wipe down the desk, assemble writing materials, write, clear off the desk for the next officer, return to patrol. Whether he had arrested a shoplifter or a more malignant offender, Homer completed his duties in calm contrast to the noisy folks in the squad room railing against inhumanities witnessed for the umpteenth time.

Psalm 139 describes the omniscience of God, knowing and forming us while still in our mothers’ wombs and abiding with us, no matter how far we traverse. The psalmist concludes with a request: “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” But first, (I’m paraphrasing verses 18-21) let me tell you how much I hate all the people who don’t love you like I do. Why don’t you hurry up and obliterate them from the face of the earth?! Oh, for the patience of Homer.

MOVING FORWARD: As you move through your duties this week, be especially intentional about the ways you love and encourage people.
