FROM THE RECTOR

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Annual Meeting on Sunday! We had 29 parishioners present plus our Boy Scout Troop 151 members and scout masters for the beginning. After our delicious brunch they helped George and Bruce dig the snow away from the windows in the Memorial Garden. A big thank you to them all!
One of the highlights of the meeting was the table discussions and sharing of the highlights of the year (see picture). This discussion was the precursor to a larger discussion to be held following the 9:00 service on March 3, in which we will focus on looking ahead to the next several years. Please put this on your calendars and stay tuned for more information about this meeting.
Other highlights including recognizing those who completed terms of service: Dale Appleton as alternate to Diocesan Convention and Convocation meetings; Chris Mills as Vestry member Carol Tubman as Senior Warden for three terms and Chris and Carol for leading our Fun-Raising efforts for the past two years. Thank you, Dale Chris and Carol! Carol served as Sr. Warden through Heidi’s announcement of her retirement, supply priest The Rev. Bill Cruz’s six weeks with you, the interim period and search and my first year as Rector. We are so grateful to you, Carol, and wish you a well deserved and fruitful break from leadership responsibilities!

Finally, we recognized Barbara Lord for her creative and faithful service in 2018, not to mention her years on the Stewardship Committee and her many creative endeavors over the years. The quilt project she led for Raise the Roof was amazing, bringing so many members together and drawing people from the community as well, and resulting in the beautiful quilt for the raffle. And she made all the squares you returned with your pledges into our new stewardship banner! Thank you, Barbara!!

SEMINAR

How To Read the Bible: What Is It and Which Translation: an online seminar in the Diocese of Maine February 21 & 28
An online two-week discussion of how the Bible came into being, ways to read it, and how Episcopalians read it. You can join this from the comfort of your home. We will meet online on Thursdays February 21 & 28. Orientation and introductions are at 6:00pm and the seminar is from 6:15-7:15. If you are new to using Zoom on your computer, we will help you to get oriented before the first session, and if that fails you can participate by phone.

Our leader, Deirdre Good ThD, is an experienced teacher of the New Testament and Christian origins. She is a licensed lay preacher in the Diocese of Maine, a parishioner at St. Margaret's Belfast, and on the faculty at the Stevenson School for Ministry in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. We'll record the presentation for churches who want to use it in the future.

This seminar is free. Questions about the seminar? Please email Deirdre Good or Jane Hartwell . Register here. (https://episcopalmaine.formstack.com/forms/bible2019)

~
I have submitted my resignation as Dinner Bell Coordinator effective 6/10/19 to Rev. Hines with a copy to Carol Tubman and Debra Hoyt. It has been a pleasure to serve as Coordinator but I could not have done it without the support and assistance of Carol and Debra and all of you. So Thank You All So Much!!
I will still be Coordinator until 6/10/19 and will arrange our annual meeting in May and I also will be available to help orient the new Coordinator.
The reason for my resignation is due to my having additional responsibilities at my job and also because I want to have more spontaneous time with my family.
I hope that some of you may be interested in being the Coordinator and if you are please contact me or Carol Tubman. I found it to be a very rewarding experience and am so grateful for all your help. Plus Dinner Bell is such a wonderful community outreach program which is so appreciated by all the guests.
With heartfelt thanks to all of you!!

Beverly
Thank you for your volunteer

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

In honor of Black History Month, here is a bite-sized piece of wisdom from the late, great literary genius, Maya Angelou. She didn’t call herself a Christian - not exactly.  In an interview on the occasion of being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she put it this way:

“I’m always amazed when people walk up to me and say, ‘I’m a Christian.’ I think, ‘Already? You already got it?’ I’m working at it, which means that I try to be as kind and fair and generous and respectful and courteous as possible to every human being."

COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER
COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER
The Food Pantry thanks you for your contributions throughout the year.
The monthly item for February is razors for men/women.

The Community Food Center (CFC), which operates out of St. Andrew’s Church on Old Route 25 in Tamworth, is looking for new volunteers to help with this important program.  The Center is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 am to noon for clients to come in and pick up their food. On each of these days, two volunteers staff the Center and a CFC Board Member is on hand to help and answer questions. Scheduling is done bi-monthly and substitutes provide flexibility for volunteers who have other commitments.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY

THURSDAY February 7, 2019

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
When we think of freedom, we often picture a complete lack of restriction on our actions. We can do what we want, when we want to do it. In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he talks about a different kind of freedom.
In the first verse of this chapter of Galatians, Paul tells us never to submit again to a yoke of slavery because Christ has set us free. And yet by verse 13, Paul uses the same words—freedom and slavery—to paint a far different picture.
Paul is not contradicting himself. Christ does set us free, but the type of freedom we have in Christ is not a selfish kind of freedom. It is a freedom that allows us to be bound to each other and to Jesus by loving one another.

MOVING FORWARD: Boundaries in our personal relationships are important. Where is the line between self-indulgence and self-care?
