Update on returning to in-person worship: We will return to in-person worship on March 13. Services will continue to be livestreamed on Zoom and Facebook Live. Masks will be required and the Vestry asks that you maintain physical distancing as indicated by the round yellow stickers in the pews. Please, for the safety of others, plan to attend church on Zoom if you have recently traveled and/or been present at large gatherings, or are not feeling well.

Lenten Book Study

This year’s Lenten Book study will begin on Wednesday, March 9 at 1:30 pm and run through April 13, the Wednesday in Holy Week. Please let Caroline know if you plan to join this book study. Attendance at every session is not required; come as you are able.

BOOK CHANGE: The book is Witness at the Cross: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Friday by Amy Jill Levine, Ph.D. It is available on Amazon for $16.19. We have studied other books by Amy Jill Levine and thoroughly enjoyed them, along with the accompanying DVDs.

Here is the blurb on the book from Amazon:

Experience Holy Friday from the perspective of those who watched Jesus die: Mary his mother; the Beloved Disciple from the Gospel of John; Mary Magdalene and the other women from Galilee; the two men, usually identified as thieves, crucified with Jesus; the centurion and the soldiers; Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Jews and Romans, friends and strangers, the powerful and the powerless, the hopeful and the despairing.

The story of Jesus’s death is not something we just read: we think about it, and we experience it; we hear the taunts of the soldiers, the priests, and the passersby even as we hear the famous “seven last words” from the cross.

In Witness at the Cross, Amy-Jill Levine shows how the people at the cross each have distinct roles to play. Each Evangelist presents a distinct picture of the death of Jesus. Each portrays different individuals and groups of people at the cross, each offers different images and dialogues, and so from each, we learn how those meanings and messages cross the centuries to any who would come to the cross today.

Each Gospel has its own story to tell, all the witnesses have their own memories, and every reader comes away with a new insight. The witnesses at the Crucifixion watch Jesus die, and we watch with them, and we watch them. And we come away transformed.

Blessings, Caroline

The First Sunday in Lent

The Collect

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Lesson   Deuteronomy 26:1-11

In this first reading from the Hebrew Bible the Lord's mighty salvation of Israel from slavery in  Egypt is recalled, and the people are bid to offer in thanksgiving the first fruits of their fields. The passage presents one of Judaism's oldest summaries of its history and confessions of its faith. It is always to be remembered that it was God who made them a people, who heard and delivered them from their distress and gave them this good land for a heritage.

Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16

A hymn of trust in Lord. The Lord will guard and deliver the one who loves and seeks refuge with God.

The Second Lesson       Romans 10:8b-13

In this lesson Paul teaches that the word of faith is a gift to us; by it we make our saving confession that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead. Without God's grace the way of righteousness would  be impossibly distant. But faith that leads to righteousness is in our hearts and the confession of salvation is on our lips. This is true for all people, no matter what their background, who call upon the name of the Lord.

The Gospel  Luke 4:1-13

Our gospel is the story of the temptation of Jesus by the devil. After his baptism Jesus is led into the wilderness and confronted with the temptations which are inescapable in his ministry. He might seek to show that he is the Son of God by satisfying material needs, or he could control lives by ruling with worldly pomp and authority. Or, in what may be seen as the greatest temptation, he could direct allegiance through miraculous power. Instead Jesus three times confesses his obedience to the will of God.

DIOCESAN CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The School for Ministry was launched in 2020 to develop leaders—both lay and ordained—called from throughout the region. The school serves students both online and in person at Trinity Church, Tilton. As a local resource, it offers students lower costs and an attractive alternative to attending a residential seminary full time. The school also has a particular focus on the development of bi-vocational leaders.

Funding is needed for a full-time dean, stipends for faculty, coverage of curriculum fees, scholarships for students, and upkeep and improvement of the school’s in-person space.

Without the School for Ministry, we would not have a priest at Emmanuel Church in Ashland, Holderness, and Plymouth

Consider:

How does local education of future clergy and lay leaders provide more opportunities for the church in New Hampshire and neighboring dioceses?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Food for Thought

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

~ Wendell Berry
