FROM THE RECTOR

As the weather turns cooler, the leaves fall and the calendar turns to November, my thoughts turn to Thanksgiving, and gratitude. In the wake of the Tree of Life Synagogue shootings in Pittsburgh last week, gratitude seems especially important. How are we to deal with such horrors in our country? How are we to deal with violence in a synagogue? I like what our Presiding Bishop had to say:

“We must pray, we must pray for the gunman, we must pray for the spirit of our nation, that a spirit of love and compassion and goodness and decency would pervade, and that spirits of hatred and bigotry would be cast away. But, above all, at this time, pray for those who have died and for their families and their loved ones. Pray for those who are wounded. Pray for the first responders, pray for our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community. Pray for the Tree of Life synagogue. Pray for the City of Pittsburgh. Pray for America. Pray for us all.

And then, go out and do something. Do something that helps to end the long night and helps to bring in the daylight. Visit a neighbor. Remind our Jewish brothers and sisters that they do not stand alone. Care for someone. Love. Stand for what is right and good. Then pray. And then act.”

And I would add, remember your blessings, and give thanks. Remember to be grateful, because living with a spirit of gratitude helps us deal with all that is wrong in our world. If we begin each day by thanking God for all that is good in our lives, and end each day in the same way, if we do what we can for others, we can be agents of God’s love and light even in the face of hate and violence. May it be so with each of us.

In the busyness of this day
Grant me a stillness of seeing, O God.
In the conflicting voices of my heart
Grant me a calmness of hearing
Let my seeing and hearing
My words and my actions
Be rooted in a silent certainty of your presence
Let my passions for life
And the longings for justice that stir within me
Be grounded in the experience of your stillness
Let my life be rooted in the ground of your peace O God,
Let me be rooted in the depths of your peace.

Amen

Wisdom 3:1 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.
At times I have pictured the saints like superheroes. They may not have invisible jets or capes like Wonder Woman or Superman, but for me, saints are incredible and exotic. Occasionally I see glimpses of truth, like on a cold, wet, January day in 2014, when I gathered with several hundred people to honor the martyrdom of a saint.
Following prayers, the crowd venerated the relics of the saint. I saw a speck of bone encased in gold and a pair of gloves worn by the martyr on the day he died. Both seemed small and vulnerable—very much human, very much like me. I reached into my coat pocket to touch my own gloves.
In that tender and tactile moment, I realized how very human are the saints of the Church and how their humanity gives us a fuller image of God’s plan. As I left the church, I couldn’t help but sing a song of the saints of God. God help me to be one too.
MOVING FORWARD: Remember your favorite saint in your prayer time today.
