Memories are good!
We will be together again!

FROM THE RECTOR

Our book group completed The Good Book Club’s study of the Gospel of Matthew this week and has chosen our next topic. We will read Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi, by Amy-Jill Levine an engaging author we’ve really enjoyed in previous studies. This book study will begin on Wednesday, June 17 at 12:30 pm, and run for six weeks. Some of the parable covered are the Prodigal Son, the Lost Coin, the Mustard Seed and the Good Samaritan. Each session begins with a short video by the author.

This Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, we will worship with the Bishop and many other churches around the diocese on. The service is at 10:00. There will be special music with the wind videos you have shared and the service will be accompanied by a liturgy you can use to share an Agape meal with your household. Wear your Pentecost FIRE colors and post your selfies on our Facebook book page during the service! You may join the Zoom webinar by clicking HERE (for video and audio) or by calling (audio only) 1-929-205-6099 and entering Webinar ID: 982 5949 0741. The order of worship is HERE.

Following the service we will gather for coffee hour at our usual Zoom link. I’ll send out an email on Friday or Saturday with the Zoom links and the worship bulletin.

Next Sunday, June 7, our St. Andrew’s service will be at 9:00, since it is the first Sunday of the month. Mark your calendars! I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Blessings,

Caroline

An Invitation to a Meeting on Contemplative Practice

God of mystery, who inhabits the silences and the spaces, who knows and is known by the creation you have fashioned, grant [us] courage to seek you in the wild, hidden places. Fill [our] vision with your wisdom, that [we] may perceive your holy dwellings.

a prayer by Jan Richardson, artist, poet, pastor

Throughout the ages, humans from all faith traditions have sat in stillness and silence in support of their spirit. There is an inner healing presence available to us when we stop, notice, and allow. If you are interested in building a contemplative practice or are looking for silence in community, please plan to attend a conversation about how and when a group may be formed.  We will gather via Zoom, Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 10:00am.

Our conversation will begin with a brief sitting practice, facilitated by Christi Humphrey.  Christi has led other groups which gather to explore contemplative practices through meditation, teachings, and discussion. Guided meditations and teachings draw upon the Christian contemplative tradition, monastic spirituality, Buddhist meditation, and self-compassion practices.

If you would like to learn more or have questions, contact Christi Humphrey at cchumphrey@comcast.net.

FUN WITH NAMES

FUN WITH NAMES.

I am glad to hear that you have had fun with the first installment of learning about our church’s architecture, furnishings, and history. Here are the answers from last week, followed by a new set of questions for this week.

1.      The Aumbry (AWE-M-bree) is where the Reserve Sacrament (consecrated Bread and Wine) is kept during the week. Its gracefully carved door is the work of wood sculptor Sammie Wakefield.

2.      The narthex, unfortunately, is not in the sacristy. Might be a bit of a squeeze! Narthex is a Greek word originally meaning box or giant fennel (!). It came to mean portico or lobby

of an early Christian church. Today, we might use vestibule, a small entrance hall.

3.      Hopefully, we will find the cornerstone.

4.      Mrs. Kilham’s ashes are, indeed, in the wall of the acolyte closet.

5.      A lavabo (lah-VAH-bo) is the pewter receiving bowl used by an acolyte when pouring water over the priest’s hands during the prayer of Consecration.

A NEW PUZZLE (One question has two correct answers.)

What is a chancel?                                                                                                                                       1. A short hymn of praise usually sung at Evening Prayer.

2. The space around the altar of a church for clergy, acolytes, and choir.

3. A Bishop’s signet often used with sealing wax to secure important church documents.

Who was Mr. Walter Kilham?

1.The architect for Saint Andrew’s

2. The first minister called to serve at Saint Andrew’s.

3.  The Sexton from 1952-58

What is a Rood screen?

1. A test to discover if a person has tendencies toward saying nasty things out loud.

2. A carved lattice-like partition, often with arched openings, placed between the nave and the choir of Gothic cathedrals.

3. Something we do not have at Saint Andrew’s, but is fun to recognize when visiting other churches in the diocese.

Where is our one stained glass window at church?

 1.  In the narthex.

2.  Over the organ.

3. There is no stained glass window at church.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

From Pentecost Sunday through the first Sunday in September, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and his Lutheran counterpart Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton welcome congregations and individuals to regularly pray “A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit among the People of God.” This prayer – crafted by a team of Lutheran and Episcopal prayer leaders in light of the COVID pandemic – is meant to unite us in common prayer and revive us for common mission, wherever and however we may be gathered.

A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit among the People of God

God of all power and love,
we give thanks for your unfailing presence
and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss.
Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire.
Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world:
a people who pray, worship, learn,
break bread, share life, heal neighbors,
bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit.
Wherever and however we gather,
unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission,
that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OUTSIDE CHURCH - FUN WITH NAMES

FUN WITH NAMES

The Episcopal Church has inherited from her Anglican roots a vocabulary which to our ears often sounds archaic, stuffy, and irrelevant.  However, I find the origins of these words not only help me remember them, but increase my knowledge of church architecture and furnishings. And it is full of surprises.

For example, did you know that the word credence, as in “credence table” comes from Medieval Latin, credentia, a cabinet, table or sideboard (credenza), esp. one without legs? In the earliest churches, a credenza was simply a shelf carved into the wall.

Digging further, the origin of credentia is the Latin verb credere, to believe, from which comes credo =I believe, the first two words of the Apostles’ Creed.

Over the next few months, the Thursday Memo will bring you three to five multiple choice questions about the architecture, furnishings, and history of Saint Andrew’s.  My hope is that when we return to the building, we will look about us saying, “Ah-HAH! There’s the narthex, aumbry, and retable.” And perhaps give a wave to Mrs. Kilham.

What is an aumbry? (AWEm-bree)
1.      A medieval velvet canopy used to protect the clergy from sun when walking the church property lines on Rogation Sunday.
2.      A collection plate
3.      Where the Reserve Sacrament (consecrated Bread and Wine) is kept during the week.

Where is the narthex?
1.      In the sacristy.
2.      Between the front and inner-front doors of the church.
3.      Under the cornerstone.

Where is the cornerstone?
1.      Good question.

Where are Mrs. Kilham’s ashes?
1.      In the Memorial Garden.
2.      Outside, below the large altar window.
3.      In the wall of the acolyte closet.

What is a lavabo? (lah-VAH-bo)
1        A Roman swimming pool.
2        The pewter receiving bowl used by an acolyte when pouring water over the priest’s hands
3        A volcanic explosion.
