Our book
group completed The Good Book Club’s study of the Gospel of Matthew this week
and has chosen our next topic. We will read Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a
Controversial Rabbi, by Amy-Jill
Levine an engaging author we’ve really enjoyed in previous studies. This
book study will begin on Wednesday, June 17 at 12:30 pm, and run for six weeks.
Some of the parable covered are the Prodigal Son, the Lost Coin, the Mustard
Seed and the Good Samaritan. Each session begins with a short video by the
author.
This Sunday,
Pentecost Sunday, we will worship with the Bishop and many other churches around
the diocese on. The service is at 10:00. There will be special music
with the wind videos you have shared and the service will be accompanied by a
liturgy you can use to share an Agape meal with your household. Wear your Pentecost FIRE colors
and post your selfies on our Facebook book page during the service!

Following the service we will gather for coffee hour at our

National Day of Mourning and Lament
Service with Bishop Rob

As
we mark the death of over 100,000 people in the US from COVID-19, Presiding
Bishop Michael Curry along with faith leaders across the country have called
for a National Day of Mourning and Lament, Monday, June 1, 2020.
Bishop Rob will preside over a Service of Solemn Memorial for
those who have died as a result of COVID-19. The service will be held on Zoom,

Practice

Throughout the ages, humans from all faith traditions have sat in stillness and silence in support of their spirit. There is an inner healing presence available to us when we stop, notice, and allow. If you are interested in building a contemplative practice or are looking for silence in community, please plan to attend a conversation about how and when a group may be formed. We will gather via Zoom, Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 10:00am.
Our conversation will begin with a brief sitting practice, facilitated by Christi Humphrey. Christi has led other groups which gather to explore contemplative practices through meditation, teachings, and discussion. Guided meditations and teachings draw upon the Christian contemplative tradition, monastic spirituality, Buddhist meditation, and self-compassion practices.

Thank you for continuing to honor your pledges during this time. While we cannot gather in the church, our usual practices for counting, recording and depositing your pledge payments continue. You may mail your checks to the office or set up a direct payment through the bill pay feature of your bank. FUN WITH NAMES.
I am glad to hear that you have had fun with the
first installment of learning about our church’s architecture, furnishings, and
history. Here are the answers from last week, followed by a new set of questions
for this week.
1. The
Aumbry (AWE-M-bree) is where the Reserve Sacrament (consecrated Bread and Wine)
is kept during the week. Its gracefully carved door is the work of wood
sculptor Sammie Wakefield.
2. The
narthex, unfortunately, is not in the
sacristy. Might be a bit of a squeeze! Narthex
is a Greek word originally meaning box
or giant fennel (!). It came to mean portico
or lobby
of an early Christian church.
Today, we might use vestibule, a
small entrance hall.
3. Hopefully,
we will find the cornerstone.
4. Mrs.
Kilham’s ashes are, indeed, in the wall of the acolyte closet.
5. A
lavabo (lah-VAH-bo) is the pewter receiving bowl used by an acolyte when
pouring water over the priest’s hands during the prayer of Consecration.
A NEW PUZZLE (One
question has two correct answers.)
What is a chancel? 1. A short hymn of praise usually sung at Evening Prayer.
2. The space around the altar of a church for clergy, acolytes, and choir.
3. A Bishop’s signet often used with sealing wax to secure important
church documents.

What is a Rood screen?
1. A test to discover if a person has tendencies toward saying nasty things out loud.
2. A carved lattice-like partition, often with arched openings, placed between the nave and the choir of Gothic cathedrals.

Something we do not have at Saint Andrew’s, but is fun to recognize when
visiting other churches in the diocese.

The documentary
that Sarah participated in, Changing the Game, is coming to end of it's 400+
film festival 15 month run.
The film has been selected at the opening night film for OutStream Film Festival, and is available for online viewing for purchase. Sarah and the other athletes will be participating in a live Q & A after the film.
We do not know what the future holds for distribution of the documentary.

Pentecost Sunday through the first Sunday in September, Presiding Bishop
Michael Curry and his Lutheran counterpart Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
welcome congregations and individuals to regularly pray “A Prayer for the Power
of the Spirit among the People of God.” This prayer – crafted by a team of
Lutheran and Episcopal prayer leaders in light of the COVID pandemic – is meant
to unite us in common prayer and revive us for common mission, wherever and
however we may be gathered.
A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit among the People of God
God of
all power and love,
we give thanks for your unfailing presence
and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss.
Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire.
Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world:
a people who pray, worship, learn,
break bread, share life, heal neighbors,
bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit.
Wherever and however we gather,
unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission,
that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
