FROM THE RECTOR

Thank you all for your continued prayers and offers to help me out while I can’t drive. I continue to do well, though as I feel better and the weather improves I do miss being out in the yard! (My scooter doesn’t work very well on uneven ground.)

Last Sunday following our service we talked about when we will begin in-person outside worship. Group consensus was to wait until June, after the black flies are gone and avoiding Motorcycle week, which according to the website is June 12-20. That would push us to June 27, but June 6 is a possibility if the weather is dry and people are willing to brave the black flies.

I’m also considering an indoor service with about 15 people in attendance (including readers) on Pentecost, May 23. That would be by sign up or by lottery, depending on how many are interested in attending, with Communion available after the service in the parking lot as on Palm Sunday and Easter.

As stated last week, we will record any services at the church and live stream them on Zoom and Facebook as usual. Those gathered in person will continue to follow the COVID safety protocols of maintaining physical distance and wearing masks, as many, but not all of us are vaccinated.

Finally, a note about Facebook: last Sunday Facebook had changed the settings for livestreaming through Zoom, so I was not able to livestream our Sunday morning service on Facebook. My apologies to those of you who typically tune in via Facebook. If this happens again I hope you will join us via Zoom.

I would love to hear from you if you have thoughts or comments to share about outdoor or indoor in-person services. Please email me at RectorSAITV@gmail.com.

 Blessings,

Caroline

Sixth Sunday after Easter, Year B

The Collect

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson                              Acts 10:44-48

In our New Testament lesson Peter has gone to visit Cornelius, a Gentile and Roman centurion, and has proclaimed to him the good news of Jesus, that all who believe in Jesus will receive forgiveness of sins.  Even as Peter is speaking the Holy Spirit falls upon the gathered and they extol God and speak in tongues, as had happened to Jewish disciples with the arrival of the Spirit. The Jewish believers who had come with Peter are astounded that the Spirit has fallen impartially also upon the Gentiles, and Peter is persuaded that baptism must be extended to these new believers

Psalm 98

A song of thanksgiving and praise to the victorious Lord, who has made divine righteousness known and shown faithfulness to the people of God.

The Second Lesson                    1 John 5:1-6

In this lesson we hear that belief in Jesus as the Christ, together with love of all God’s children, form the heart of the Christian faith.  This faith is victorious over the world; that is, over godless society.  To love God means to obey God’s commandments, and the essence of the commandments is the love of all who are of God.  The one who overcomes the world believes that Jesus is the Son of God, who was present in the world not only through the water of his baptism but in the blood of his crucifixion.

The Gospel            John 15:9-17

In our gospel Jesus speaks of his great love for his disciples and calls upon them to show this same love toward each other that has come to him from the Father.  Jesus is talking with his disciples shortly before his death, when he will be taken away from them.  But this love has now formed his followers into a new community in relationship with Jesus and the Father.  They are no longer servants but friends.

and a blue true dream of sky; for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(I who have died am alive again today
and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings; and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any—lifted from the no
of all nothing—human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
