BOOK STUDY: Our last book study will meet after the 10:00 service on Sunday, November 13 .  Please read Chapters 5-6, and join us for a lively discussion. 

SAVE THE DATE: Caroline and Christi will lead a workshop on Spiritual Gifts following the 9:00 service on December 4. Please put this on your calendar and plan to attend! More information will follow.

The CDC WEBSITE places Carroll County in the MEDIUM range for Covid community spread. Masks are not required (but are welcomed!) and the section across from the choir is reserved for those who wish to sit with others who are masked.  We will have coffee hour.

We continue to ask that you attend church online instead of in person if you have been in a large gathering in the prior week.

The Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost 

The Collect of the Day

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    The First Reading          Malachi 4:1-2a

In our first lesson the prophet Malachi tells of a day of foreboding and doom when all evildoers will 
be laid waste and consumed. Those who hold fast to the Lord and trust in God's name shall prevail 
and the sun of righteousness shall establish their vindication.

 Psalm            Psalm 98               

A song of thanksgiving and praise to the victorious Lord, who has made righteousness known and shown faithfulness to the people of God.

The Second Reading   2 Thessalonians 3:6-13  

In this lesson Paul deals with the problem of those who are so expectant that the Lord will come soon and are so meddlesome in the affairs of others that they have given up their daily work. These individuals may have believed that they were already exalted to such a spiritual plane that mundane matters were no longer a concern for them. This may seem like piety on their part, but it means they have become a problem for others. Paul reminds them of his own example and bluntly rules that such people should either work or else not eat.

The Holy Gospel          Luke 21:5-19

In the gospel passage the disciples are forewarned of the destruction of the Jewish temple and of great upheavals in the natural and supernatural order that must take place before the end of history. There will be persecutions and divisions in families. Individuals will appear claiming to be Jesus. While in some passages the New Testament suggests that the end and fulfillment of human time will come quite unexpectedly, here the disciples are advised of a period of great tribulation when the powers of evil will make their final onslaught. In one sense this is poetic language used to describe the indescribable, but it insists that the ultimate meaning of life will finally be known.
