FROM THE RECTOR

SUNDAY IS STEWARDSHIP INGATHERING DAY.

Please bring your pledge and gift cards to church on Sunday so they can be blessed and included in the pledge count as we begin to prepare the budget for 2023. Thank you to all who have already turned them in.

The Stewardship Committee is preparing goodie bags for coffee hour on Sunday, or you may take them home with you.

The CDC website and Covid Act Now place Carroll County in the medium range for Covid community spread.

UPDATE ON MASKING

Feedback from you at our services on Sunday indicated a slight majority in favor of optional masking when we are in the medium range, and required masking only in the high range. (The majority at 8:00 preferred to mask at the medium range; the majority at 10:00 preferred to mask only at the high range.)

The Vestry then voted to require masks only at the high level, consistent with CDC recommendations. Going forward we will thus follow CDC guidelines, and only require masking at the high level. A space will be reserved for those who wish to sit with others who are masked.

This also means that coffee hour can resume. While we're enjoying this beautiful weather those who are more comfortable taking refreshments outside can do so.

Knowing that large group gatherings are where many of us have caught Covid, we continue to ask that you attend church online instead of in person if you have been in a large gathering in the prior week.

This event will also be live streamed on the diocesan YouTube page. The link to view online is here: YouTube page.

BOOK STUDY

Our last book study will meet after the 10:00 service on Sunday, November 13 .  Please read Chapters 5-6 for our final meeting.

SAVE THE DATE: SPIRITUAL GIFTS WORKSHOP ON DECEMBER 4

On Sunday, December 4 following the 9:00 service Christi Humphrey and I will lead a workshop on identifying our spiritual gifts. We will talk about our Baptismal vows, Baptismal ministry, fill out a Spiritual Gifts Inventory to help us identify our own gifts, and discuss what is needed as we move into having a part time rector.

Christi’s background of study in Baptismal or Total Ministry, a way of  collaborative church leadership, is one of the gifts she brings to our community. Within the workshop, we will have space to recognize and name all the gifts that are at St. Andrew’s in abundance.

Please plan to join us for what is sure to be a good time and great discussion! The more parishioners who participate the greater the impact of this workshop.

LET US DREAM OF A CHURCH...

If you missed last Sunday or couldn't hear the sermon on Zoom, the poem that was read is attached to the email you received with the link to this Thursday Memo.

The questions posed for the discussion on the poem were:

What dreams does the poem stir up for you about St. Andrew’s?

·     How do you see yourself involved in these dreams – how can you be a part of these dreams?

FALL CLEAN UP DAY

FALL CLEAN-UP DAY
Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022

We need all hands on deck for our Fall Clean-Up Day to get ready for winter and help our beloved church shine!  For those who prefer outdoor work, we have exterior windows to be washed (I believe I heard George say he was volunteering to head this battalion up!), leaves to be raked and hauled away, and gardens to be put to bed.  If you would like to attend to inside tasks, sanctuary windows need attention, lots of not-so-hidden cobwebs lurking in corners of the woodwork require dusting, and glass light fixtures to be cleaned.

As a “thank you” from the Building & Grounds Committee (and friends) for all your help, we invite you to stay and share a meal of chili and cornbread outside in our beautiful field.  Please bring a lawn chair and we can space them apart as need be.  Hope to see you Sunday,
Lin

CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICE

Contemplative Practice Continues

Tuesday, November 15 from 9:00-10:00am

Teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.

Psalm 90:12

The pace with which we move through our days can cause our hearts to be weary and distracted. We can feel disconnected from our lives. Making room in our life to pause, sit in silence, and simply be can help us reconnect and strengthen our hearts.

Each Tuesday morning our session will draw upon the Christian contemplative tradition, monastic spirituality, mindfulness meditation, and self-compassion practices. Our time together will include prayer, guided meditation, contemplative sharing from the heart, conversation, and fellowship. Newcomers are welcome at each session.

We will gather via Zoom.

If you would like to learn more or have questions, contact Christi Humphrey at cchumphrey@comcast.net.

Christi offers a Tuesday evening contemplative practice, virtually, through Bethany House of Prayer, Arlington, MA. If you are interest in this offering visit https://www.bethanyhousearlington.org/contemplative or contact Christi.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY
Sunday November 6, 2022
The Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost

The Collect of the Day
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    The First Reading          Job 19:23-27a

In our Hebrew Bible reading the deeply troubled Job continues to struggle with the injustices that affect his life. He trusts one day he will be vindicated. Job believes he has lived decently and honestly. Yet every misfortune imaginable has befallen him. Neither his friends nor God can give him a satisfactory reason for his troubles. That is why he wishes his plea to be lastingly engraved in stone and trusts that God will at last be his defender.

 Psalm                            Psalm 17:1-9

A Psalm for justice and protection by one who has followed God's ways.

The Second Reading     2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17

This epistle was written in part as a correction to a misunderstanding about the "day of the Lord," which some in the early Christian community feared had already arrived. The apostle seeks to lay to rest their fears, and to encourage them to a more mature faith, sure of God's grace and confident of their standing in the Lord. Many signs will precede the final day of judgement, and the Lord Jesus Christ will win a definitive and clear victory over all opposing forces. Prayer is offered for good hope and comfort that will strengthen the Thessalonian disciples in their every word and good work.

The Holy Gospel           Luke 20:27-38
In the gospel, the Sadducees ask a question about the resurrection. Jesus replies that resurrection means a different existence from earthly life, and that it depends on a God who has a personal and living relationship with all people. The Sadducees did not believe in resurrection from death, and they attempted to make it seem absurd by asking what would them be the legal situation for a person who had been married several times. Jesus cuts through their apparent cleverness. There is no need for marriage after the resurrection. What is more, the Bible continues to speak of the patriarchs as though they were still alive before God.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
  All Saints Day

God of grace,

For all the saints who have made this world a better place
I give you my praise.
For the saints who have loved me, I give you thanks.
For those who blessed me without my knowing,
who loved me from behind the curtain, I bless you.
For the ones who forgave my selfishness,
who embraced my loneliness, who understood my fear,
I praise the mystery of your grace.
For the ones who blessed others, and the ones who blessed
them,
by whom my world was improved, I thank you.
For the ones who never knew they blessed me,
who shone with light they themselves didn't see, I thank you.
And for those who tried and fell short, I give thanks.
For those whose unconquered struggles taught me,
whose courageous failures inspired me,
whose attempts at grace, despite their crudeness, achieved grace,
I thank you.
For the saints who picked my fruit and sewed my shirts,
who built my world without thanks or pay, I humbly praise.
Bless all the saints in whose blessing I live.
And now sanctify me, dear God,
that I may be a blessing to others.
Amen.
