  FROM THE RECTOR

SPIRITUAL GIFTS WORKSHOP: Caroline and Christi will lead a workshop on Spiritual Gifts following the 9:00 service this Sunday, December 4. Please plan to attend and learn more about your own spiritual gifts! The workshop will include a spiritual gifts survey, small group discussion and how our gifts match ministries at St. Andrew's and beyond.

Please email me if you plan to attend this workshop at rectorsaitv@gmail.com. We need to know how many handouts to make. Thank you.

MY SCHEDULE IS CHANGING AS I MOVE TO HALF-TIME: Beginning Sunday my schedule will be change to only one day in the office, on Wednesday. I will work remotely on Thursday, and will be here on Sunday mornings for services.

CHANGE IN ANNOUNCEMENTS: As I've prepared for working half-time I've looked at which administrative duties I can pass on to others to free up some of my time. The Thursday Memo and the Sunday bulletin are two areas I've identified. Pat Adams will help with the Thursday Memo, and Tina Quinn will help with the bulletin as soon as she gets out of her sling. As I pass on these responsibilities committee chairs will need to take responsibility for emailing announcements to Marti by noon Tuesday for the bulletin and the Thursday Memo, and making announcements during church services.

THE THURSDAY MEMO WILL BECOME AN EVERY OTHER WEEK PUBLICATION, beginning this week. Marti will draft it when she is in, and on her off weeks we will not publish. The next publication will be on Thursday, December15. Please send in your announcements by noon on Tuesday December 13.

BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE: This year's Blue Christmas service will be held on Wednesday, December 21 at 5:30 pm. Please join us for this quiet, contemplative time to honor the losses in our lives.

The CDC places Carroll County in the LOW range for Covid community spread. Masks are not required (but are welcomed!) and the section across from the choir is reserved for those who wish to sit with others who are masked.  We will have coffee hour.

We continue to ask that you attend church online instead of in person if you have been in a large gathering in the prior week.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY
Sunday December 4, 2022
                                                    The Second Sunday of Advent

The Collect of the Day
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    The First Reading        Isaiah 11:1-10

In our lesson from the Hebrew Bible the prophet foresees a time when God will bring forth a righteous judge and a new spirit of peace in the world. The wise and faithful judge will come from the stump of Jesse- that is, from the line of the great King David, whose father was Jesse. The Spirit of the Lord will be his as he defends the humble and slays the wicked. The new age of peace will extend even to the animal kingdom.

Psalm            Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19

The psalm asks that God endow the king with compassionate justice and righteousness, and that his reign may extend over all nations and throughout all generations.

The Second Reading   Romans 15:4-13

In this reading Paul points to several passages from the Hebrew scriptures to show how God's promise that the Gentile peoples should come to praise God was being fulfilled. The new Roman converts, whom Paul hopes soon to visit, are urged to live in harmony and to recognize the manner in which Christ's ministry has brought these prophecies to fruition. He is the root of Jesse, that is, the promised son of David, on whom their hope is to be set.

The Holy Gospel      Matthew 3:1-12
Our gospel lesson tells of the ministry of John the Baptist, his message of repentance and his prophecy of the mighty one to come.  John himself is the messenger of preparation foretold by Isaiah. He baptizes with water those who confess their sins and wish to change their ways, but he chastises those who do not show the fruits of repentance. Soon comes the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with refining fire.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Every tree that does not bear good fruit
is cut down and thrown into the fire.
                           —
Mathew 3.10

Some folks imagine people are good trees

or bad ones, and the bad ones, well....

But this is not about others.
There are in me fruitful trees, and dead ones.
Now is the season of pruning,
that when the Beloved comes I will be ready
with abundant fruit.

What are the fruitful trees in me?
Where in my living does love flourish?
What moments leave others blessed?

What trees are unfruitful?
What of my habits or attitudes do not bear blessing?
What weeds crowd out my love?

God give me grace to feed the fruitful trees,
and to cut out the dead ones.
You have given me the courage and wisdom;
I have only to let them go.
The ax is lying at the root of the trees.
