Lenten Opportunities
We have a variety of Lenten meditation and study opportunities from which to choose this year. At St. Andrew’s we will meet after the 10:00 (or 9:00) service each Sunday to discuss materials related to Becoming the Beloved Community, as commended to us by our Presiding Bishop and our Diocese. We will begin this Sunday by sharing our own stories of encountering racism, classism or other forms of discrimination. All are welcome to join us for this initial session, where we will also choose a book to study together during the rest of Lent.

In addition, The Episcopal Church of New Hampshire is honored to partner with the Black Heritage Trail of NH to offer a collection of short readings about historic figures from NH's African American community. Each day in Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, we will publish one of these stories to help us see the impact and contributions of African Americans to our communities. The stories will be posted on the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire's website as well as on our website and facebook page. If you would like to receive daily emails with these stories, please REGISTER HERE .

Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John:
"...we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them..."

The Brothers of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE) in Cambridge have published a prayer journal, Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John, which is available in the parish hall. The Brothers “hope that Meeting Jesus will guide you to a deeper intimacy with God through praying with the words of John the Evangelist and his community in the Gospel According to John and the First Letter of John. We hope that by learning together from Jesus, considering his human friendships and his teachings about the God he calls ‘Father,’ we will discover God as One who longs for deep intimacy with each of us.”

In addition to the prayer journal, they are offering daily meditations that accompany the journal. If you already receive the daily email from SSJE, you will automatically receive this. If you would like to sign up to receive the daily email, go to www.meetingjesusinjohn.

Finally, there is Lent Madness, a fun and educational, sometimes (often?) irreverent online opportunity to learn about saints of the church. According to the website, “Lent Madness, the ‘saintly smackdown’ in which thirty-two saints do battle to win the coveted Golden Halo during the season of Lent,” begins on Thursday, February15.
To participate in Lent Madness, go to http://www.lentmadness.org/ and sign up for a daily email (upper right portion of webpage), or “like” it on Facebook.  On the website you can also be introduced to the Supreme Executive Committee, Celebrity Bloggers and even Nina, the Official Horse of Lent Madness.
Check out the Saintly Bracket posted by the kitchen door in the parish hall to keep up with our daily winners, and pick up a copy of the Saintly Scorecard. We only ordered ten copies, so don’t delay! This is always a lot of fun

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY

Luke 3:16b I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

John is no shrinking violet, mincer of words, or sufferer of fools. He calls the people coming to be baptized a “brood of vipers.” Definitely not the Carnegie method of winning friends and influencing people.

Despite John’s strange ways—and make no mistake, even by biblical standards, John is odd—he has an undeniable charisma, a fire that draws people to him. Even when John is insulting them, the crowds wonder if he is the long-awaited Messiah.

John is quick to disabuse them of this notion, proclaiming that he is not worthy to untie the strap of the sandal of the Messiah. This is not false modesty or a humble brag. John knows he is the opening act for the headliner, warming up the crowd for Christ. He prods people to repentance, generosity, and righteousness, preparing them for Jesus’ radical message of love and sacrifice. John wants the people of his day—and ours—to be ready, in heart, mind, and spirit.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you have friends or relatives who remind you of John? Find a way to reach out to those people with thanks and love for their bold witness in your life.
