FROM THE RECTOR

What a perfect day for our Annual Parish Picnic on Sunday – a little cool, a nice breeze to keep the bugs away and bright sunshine! The food was delicious, as always. So many people pitched in to make it a success:
·         Our grill masters, George and Bruce, who cooked and transported the grills to the park
·         Our shopper, David, who made sure we had everything we needed for the picnic
·         Our altar guild, Lisa, who brought everything we needed for the service
·         Gretchen, who provided and transported the altar flowers
·         Our musicians, Preston on keyboard and Val on harp
·         Everyone who brought side dishes and desserts

Thank you all for a wonderful day!

The first St. Andrew’s Open Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019! You may remember mention of this possibility as a fund raiser for our outreach efforts at our Annual Meeting in February. A small group has been working on making it a reality over the past several months – Jim Theodore, Jonathan Brady, George and Patti Rau and Sally DeGroot. Jim had the idea initially, and has arranged for the tournament to be held at Bald Peak Colony Club in Moultonborough, known as one of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in the Lakes Region. The tournament proceeds will help support Dinner Bell, the Community Food Pantry, Eleanor’s Project and all of the organizations we support financially each year.

We are close to completing the printed information needed to advertise and recruit sponsors and golfers - a flyer, registration form and informational packet for sponsors. And we are about to need your help. The tournament is limited to 40 golfers (ten foursomes), on a first come, first served basis, and 18 sponsorships are available (one sponsor for each hole). Please spread the word to any golfers you know, and if you have ideas or connections to businesses or organizations that might be interested in being a sponsor, please let one of the above named committee members know.

The entrance fee is $195 per golfer, and includes lunch, greens fees, use of a golf cart, a shirt and the opportunity to win prizes. Golfers may sign up as a foursome or as individuals or pairs.

Sponsorships are available at $500, $750 and $1000, and sponsors’ businesses or organizations will have a sign strategically placed at one of the 18 holes.

We will have flyers available soon with all the details, but if you have questions you may speak to any of the committee members. Meanwhile, please let us know of any sponsor connections you know of. We are excited about this, and hope that it will become an annual event!

I will be on vacation June 28 – July 6, and Deb will be away July 5 -13. If you have a pastoral emergency while I am away please call the office or our Sr. Warden, Sally DeGroot (number below).

FORWARD DAY BY DAY

THURSDAY, June 27
Luke 22:27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
When we think about greatness, we basically imagine two types of people: those who are great and those who want to be great. We all recognize the egocentric folks and roll our eyes in disgust and pity. In my own field of medicine, I see this egocentrism all the time: unchecked ambition, singular focus; self-centeredness longs to see its name at the top, no matter what it takes to get there.
But I also see people like my friend Jack, someone who has quietly plugged along doing research and caring for patients because he wants to see neurosurgery improve. For as long as I have known him, he has wanted to serve this field of medicine. Spend any time around him, and you see a great man who serves others with his gifts and talents. He makes an impact wherever he goes.
Jesus urges us to forget about being the greatest and simply serve those he loves with authenticity.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you serve those you love most this week?

FROM THE RECTOR

The Vestry had a good and productive retreat today! Stay tuned for details of what we accomplished…

Congratulations to Donna Jones, recipient of the Quality of Life award last Thursday at the RSVP annual luncheon and awards presentations. This top award was given to Donna in recognition of all she has done for the Community Food Pantry!

The weather forecast for our Parish Picnic at White Lake State Park on Sunday is looking good - sunny with a high of 80 and a breeze. I hope you are planning to attend – scroll down for details on what to bring. When you get to the gate tell the attendant that you are with St. Andrew’s and you will not be charged the entrance fee. I’m hoping the forecast for a nice breeze to keep the bugs away holds! (But bring bug spray just in case.)

ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC

Parish Picnic
JUNE 23 at 10:30 AM
A regular service of Holy Eucharist will also be held as usual at the church at 8 AM. Our event will be held rain or shine since the pavilion is under cover. This has proved to be a fun community event, so feel free to invite friends and family members who might not regularly join you for church. The worship service will begin at about 10:30 (not our regular 10:00), and will be followed by the picnic. You are free to stay and enjoy the park until park closing time.
When you come through the “check-in gate” just tell them you are there for Saint Andrew’s Picnic, then proceed to the pavilion. Set-up will be taking place from 9:00 on, so feel free to arrive early to drop off your food and get settled. The site is wheelchair accessible, including the bathrooms. Burgers, hotdogs, buns, and beverages will be provided, but you are invited to bring something for the food table: chips, salads, or dessert. The swimming at White Lake is excellent and good for children as well as adults; the water warms up early. Bring your kayak if you want to enjoy the whole late.
The official amount that the church will pay for pavilion use is $5 per person, BUT WE DO NOT CHARGE FOR THE EVENT. If you want to come, come! If you would like to help subsidize the cost to the church, we welcome your contribution, large or small. (Checks can be made out to St. Andrew’s with a memo: for parish picnic.)

What to bring: A food table contribution of chips, salad, or dessert, informal clothing suitable to the weather, including an extra layer in case it gets chilly

Optional: A comfortable portable chair (the pavilion has only backless picnic tables), swim suit and towel (if you want), sunscreen, kayak or swim toys
Directions from the south: The White Lake State Park entrance is on the left about a three-minute drive north from the West Ossipee intersection of Route 25 W and Rte 16. (Think McDonald’s, then head north toward Conway.)
Directions from the north: It is on the right about 3.5 miles south from Chocorua Village.

ALTAR FLOWERS

Please consider signing up to dedicate flowers until your summer ones are blooming.
When your blooms are ready to share from your garden please indicate that on a completed envelope from the Altar flower chart in the Parish Hall and turn in to the office.
We encourage flowers to be given in memory, in honor of or in thanksgiving. If you do not have garden flowers and would like flowers to be ordered ($20), please note that accordingly on the flower chart and submission envelope.
If you would like to arrange your own flowers, vases are available in the kitchen under the counter between the refrigerator and the small sink.
Thank you

FROM THE RECTOR

A huge thank you to our clean up volunteers on Sunday! Everything looks wonderful after all your hard work. The wood in the church is gleaming, the light fixtures in the parish hall are glowing and the grounds look beautiful. Be sure to notice the new flowers under the sign on the front lawn, an idea that was born on Sunday and came to fruition on Monday! So many of you stayed to work – and it really shows. It’s amazing how much we can accomplish in a relatively short period of time.

At the risk of leaving someone out, thank you to George and Patti, Bruce and Claudia, David M., Ray, Cathie, Gretchen, Lisa, Sammie, Kit and Suzanne, Lin, Tina, Dale, Dave A., Chris B., Tom, Bunny

GRATITUDE
Dear St. Andrew’s Family,
Ron and I are so thankful for all of the ways St. Andrew's-in-the Valley people helped us after I fell and hurt my right leg. Because I couldn't bend that knee I couldn’t drive Ron back and forth to Sanford, Maine for radiation treatments, and you helped with 12 of 28 rides for Ron. You also delivered suppers to our door and ran errands for us. Your telephone calls saying that you cared, were praying and just to say hi were most welcome. You also came up with other ways to help and organizations in the valley that offered services.
We could not have made it through without your generosity of time and spirit. We are truly blessed, and so grateful to you all!
Best Regards,
Ron and Bunny Thompson

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY
THURSDAY, June 13, 2019
2 Corinthians 12:8-9a Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul writes about the thorn in his flesh, which reminds him of his human frailty—but we still aren’t sure what he is talking about. Whatever this “thorn” is, Paul prays to the Lord for it to be taken away, but the answer he wants doesn’t come. God answers Paul’s request the same way God answers so many of our prayers about the burdens we carry: God does not remove the thorn but fortifies Paul (and us) with the strength to bear it.
Hard, awful things happen in this broken world. Nothing we can do will change that fact. Bad things happen, and they will happen to good people we love, or to us. “My grace is sufficient for you” means that we find strength in our faith. God’s sufficient grace and weakness-perfecting power means grace teaches us to see a new picture. Out of pain, suffering, crucifixion, and death comes wonder, glory, and resurrection.
MOVING FORWARD: How has God’s strength helped you bear a burden with grace?
