What a perfect day for our Annual
Parish Picnic on Sunday – a little cool, a nice breeze to keep the bugs away
and bright sunshine! The food was delicious, as always. So many people pitched
in to make it a success:

Our grill masters, George and
Bruce, who cooked and transported the grills to the park

Our shopper, David, who made
sure we had everything we needed for the picnic
·
Our altar guild, Lisa, who
brought everything we needed for the service
·
Gretchen, who provided and
transported the altar flowers
·
Our musicians, Preston on
keyboard and Val on harp
·
Everyone who brought side
dishes and desserts

The
first St. Andrew’s Open Golf Tournament will be held
on Tuesday, September 17, 2019! You may remember mention of this possibility as
a fund raiser for our outreach efforts at our Annual Meeting in February. A
small group has been working on making it a reality over the past several
months – Jim Theodore, Jonathan Brady, George and Patti Rau and Sally DeGroot.
Jim had the idea initially, and has arranged for the tournament to be held at
Bald Peak Colony Club in Moultonborough, known as one of the most beautiful and
challenging golf courses in the Lakes Region. The tournament proceeds will help
support Dinner Bell, the Community Food Pantry, Eleanor’s Project and all of
the organizations we support financially each year.
We are close to completing the printed
information needed to advertise and recruit sponsors and golfers - a flyer, registration
form and informational packet for sponsors. And we are about to need your help.
The tournament is limited to 40 golfers (ten foursomes), on a first come, first
served basis, and 18 sponsorships are available (one sponsor for each hole). Please
spread the word to any golfers you know, and if you have ideas or connections
to businesses or organizations that might be interested in being a sponsor,
please let one of the above named committee members know.
The entrance fee is $195 per golfer,
and includes lunch, greens fees, use of a golf cart, a shirt and the
opportunity to win prizes. Golfers may sign up as a foursome or as individuals
or pairs.
Sponsorships are available at $500,
$750 and $1000, and sponsors’ businesses or organizations will have a sign
strategically placed at one of the 18 holes.
We will have flyers available soon
with all the details, but if you have questions you may speak to any of the
committee members. Meanwhile, please let us know of any sponsor connections you
know of. We are excited about this, and hope that it will become an annual
event!

FORWARD DAY BY DAY
When we think about greatness, we basically imagine two types of
people: those who are great and those who want to be great. We all recognize
the egocentric folks and roll our eyes in disgust and pity. In my own field of
medicine, I see this egocentrism all the time: unchecked ambition, singular
focus; self-centeredness longs to see its name at the top, no matter what it
takes to get there.
But I also see people like my friend Jack, someone who has
quietly plugged along doing research and caring for patients because he wants
to see neurosurgery improve. For as long as I have known him, he has wanted to
serve this field of medicine. Spend any time around him, and you see a great
man who serves others with his gifts and talents. He makes an impact wherever he
goes.
Jesus urges us to forget about being the greatest and simply
serve those he loves with authenticity.
