FROM THE RECTOR

I had hip surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn labrum, and will be on crutches for the next several weeks. I’m recovering well, but am unable to drive for now. Vestry members have been kind enough to offer to drive me to church on Sunday. There will be no 8:00 service this week only. Thank you for all your help and good wishes!

I will be at a CREDO conference May 17-24, which is an opportunity to assess and plan for clergy wellness in multiple areas: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and financial health. I attended this conference about 15 years ago and it was a great experience! I look forward to participating again.

Chip Robinson will fill in for me on Sunday, May 22 at both the 8:00 and the 10:00 services.

MASKS ARE NOW REQUIRED in church again, as the Covid numbers have been on the rise and we know several people who have been infected. I think we can expect to go back and forth between wearing masks and not as the numbers rise and fall in the foreseeable future.

As before, please, for the safety of others, plan to attend church on Zoom if you have recently traveled commercially and/or been present at large gatherings, or are not feeling well.

JOHN MCGOWAN’S MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 4 at St. Andrew’s, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall and on the grounds, weather permitting.

LINK TO FORWARD DAY BY DAY For some unknown reason we didn’t receive this quarter’s copies of Forward Day by Day. For those of you who are missing it, it is available online at this link: https://prayer.forwardmovement.org/fdd/

If you would like to receive the daily reflection via email, scroll to the bottom of the website page and click on the “Subscribe” button.

The Fifth Sunday of Easter
The Collect
Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
First Reading                        Acts 11:1-18
In this reading from the story of the early church, followers of Jesus living in Judea and                Jerusalem are astonished to learn of the conversion of Gentiles as Peter tells them of his heavenly vision and how the Holy spirit fell upon the new believers. The vision helped Peter understand       that the observance of food laws and the like was not essential for discipleship.

          Psalm 148

The whole of creation and all peoples join together in praise of the Lord.
The Second Reading     Revelation 21:1-6
In this lesson John the Seer has a vision of the renewal of all creation and the new Jerusalem         as the city in which God will abide with redeemed humanity. The old order has passed away         and death is no more, neither pain nor the causes of distress and sadness. Christ in victory, the     alpha  and Omega, promises living water to any who thirst.

The Gospel  John 13:31-35
In our Gospel lesson Jesus speaks to his disciples on the night that he is to be betrayed and            handed over to death. Yet his dying as the Son of Man will also be the way that God is                glorified-both because of Jesus' sacrifice on behalf of others and because of his resurrection and    victory over the power of death. Jesus' disciples will now be known by their following of his        new commandment-that they love one another with the same sacrificial love he has shown them.

UKRAINE PRAYER

"God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen.

           What We Need is Here

Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.
