FROM THE Sr. WARDEN
-
Rev. Margaret
Custer, the rector of St. Andrew’s in the Valley from 1992 through
2002, died peacefully, Tuesday, August 8th. She was well loved
by many at St. Andrew’s as well as our community. Her family has expressed
their gratitude for our prayers and many kind thoughts. They plan a celebration
of life in the fall and will be bringing both Peg and Lee’s ashes to Tamworth
for interment into our memorial garden. As soon as we have firm dates we will
publish them. Please keep Peg’s children in your prayers.
“He who believes in me will live,
even though he dies yet shall he live.”

LOBSTER DINNER -
Many thanks to the helpful hands making the lobster dinner a success. There are many pictures from the dinner that can be found in this LOBSTER DINNER album link.
It was an exciting night with the presence of the thunderstorm that caused all hands to grab tables and move the dinner into the Parish Hall.
The excitement was added to when the lights went out and candles were lit. The grills were moved under shelter and the cooking resumed to serve up deliciousness from the Prince Room.
The wind caused the birch tree in the Memorial Garden to break onto the Sanctuary roof and has since been removed. Click, TREE REMOVAL, for more pictures.

SEARCH COMMITTEE -
“The
(parish) profile serves as the parish’s introduction to potential
candidates. At its best, the profile
uses images and words to describe the personality, mission, ministry, and
ministers of the parish; and denotes the passion and gifts for ministry it
seeks in its next Rector.”

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
Small-group
Summary Presentation after Church, Sunday, August 6, 2017
Search
Committee member Pat Adams led the discussion which focused on what we learned from
the six House Meetings. The three areas discussed were: What we do well, what
needs improvement, and what characteristics we would like to find in our next
Rector.
We are a
welcoming church with a strong lay participation in worship and in the community.
We need to focus more on Christian formation, scheduling church and community
events with enough lead-time, modeling who we are in the community, and
welcoming participation in Children-Youth ministry.
We need these,
but do we want them? Jim Theodore, a
professional head-hunter, said that if he were coming here for an
interview, he would ask us, “What is it
you would want me to be able to do, short-term and long-term?” A very good question for us all to ponder in
prayer.
The whole
parish was thanked for their support of the Committee through prayer, and for
their active participation in preparing the Profile.
Next year,
after interviews and visits to parishes, the last step in this process, will be
to present two or three candidates to the Vestry, who will make the final
decision on who we call to be our next Rector.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY

THURSDAY, August 10
Acts 19:13 Then some
itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those
who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”
I have never
witnessed anything quite like the beating the sons of Sceva receive in our
reading from Acts. I have never come across “itinerant Jewish exorcists.” No
one close to me depends on the relics of a saint, and I don’t know anyone who
has been healed by a handkerchief.
However tempting a
miraculous narrative may be, it does not resonate with the eternal truth of
Christ in the same way vulnerability does. For me, the strength of Jesus is
power made perfect in weakness. My desire to be the conduit of miracles negates
the grace upon which I depend daily. The more I long for my own greatness, the
less I sense the heavenly substance of healing that adorns Paul’s aprons and
handkerchiefs. When the love that shapes all things is formed from some
sacrifice of my prideful heart, I begin to see Christ’s handiwork in the world.
MOVING FORWARD: Do some
handiwork you have been putting off—mend a shirt, fix a button, sew on a patch.
Commit yourself to praying along with your work.
