SEARCH COMMITTEE -
“The
(parish) profile serves as the parish’s introduction to potential
candidates. At its best, the profile
uses images and words to describe the personality, mission, ministry, and
ministers of the parish; and denotes the passion and gifts for ministry it
seeks in its next Rector.”

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
Small-group
Summary Presentation after Church, Sunday, August 6, 2017
Search
Committee member Pat Adams led the discussion which focused on what we learned
from the six House Meetings. The three areas discussed were: What we do well,
what needs improvement, and what characteristics we would like to find in our
next Rector.
We are a
welcoming church with a strong lay participation in worship and in the
community. We need to focus more on Christian formation, scheduling church and
community events with enough lead-time, modeling who we are in the community,
and welcoming participation in Children-Youth ministry.
We need these,
but do we want them? Jim Theodore, a
professional head-hunter (retired), said that if he were coming here for an
interview, he would ask us, “What is it
you would want me to be able to do, short-term and long-term?” A very good question for us all to ponder in
prayer.
The whole
parish was thanked for their support of the Committee through prayer, and for
their active participation in preparing the Profile.
Next year,
after interviews and visits to parishes, the last step in this process, will be
to present two or three candidates to the Vestry, who will make the final
decision on who we call to be our next Rector.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY
-
THURSDAY, August 17
Acts 21:28 This is the man who is teaching everyone
everywhere against our people, our law, and this place.
I came into clergy life through the backdoor.
I was working as a musician, and a good friend invited me to play mandolin at a
church in a jazz venue. The community I found in that jazz venue changed my
life, leading me to seminary and eventually to ordination as an Episcopal
priest.
Some people said that this jazz-venue church
was part of an “emergent” movement of Christians. Often the emergent movement
is associated with the unexpected, like worship services in bars, homes, or
even laundromats. For me, the emergent church experience is about following
Jesus in a way that feels authentic. Some church leaders feel threatened by
this movement and question its nonchalance or cult of personality. Others
openly denounce it.
Paul knows all about this sort of criticism.
Maybe Paul and the temple leaders could have learned from one another. Or maybe
not. In our own day, I hope mutual respect will guide our church into deeper
and different ways of loving God—ways both traditional and fresh.
MOVING FORWARD: Attend church with a friend or family
member who does not attend your congregation. See what their experience of
church is like, and invite them to join you next week.
