'RAISE THE ROOF" IS UNDERWAY! |
JOIN US FOR WORSHIP
THIS SUNDAY, August 19th, The Thirteenth
Sunday after Pentecost, there will be two services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
There is a service of Morning Prayer on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m.
We hope you will join us for worship and
fellowship.
CENTERING PRAYER-With
Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast
Please
join us in the sanctuary at 5:30 Tuesday evenings during the month of August for an opportunity to deepen
and/or broaden your prayer life.
Centering Prayer is a simple practice of meditation which focuses on
your personal relationship with God. Whereas you may ‘center’ alone, the
combined energy of a group of people is noteworthy. Thomas Keaton and Richard Rohr are advocates
of quiet prayer, and research has clearly demonstrated its value for adults and
children (Newburg). The Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast will lead us in this prayer
practice. We will end no later than 6:30. No experience is necessary. Come and
pray with us. For more information please see Midge.

Roof Update
Finally,
a few days without rain so work on the roof can begin! Mike Lord and his crew
came in on Monday morning to put a tarp over the back portion of the sanctuary
where we have a leak. They were back Wednesday to begin stripping the old
shingles off that portion of the roof, and found that there are four layers of
shingles instead of the two we thought. It will be interesting to see the
condition of the roof decking and how much needs to be replaced.
The
first batch of the new metal roofing panels were cut and shaped yesterday. Here
are some pictures showing that process, which I found fascinating. The metal
comes in big rolls, and the machine is programmed to make the appropriate bends
in the panels. The metal is then sent through the machine, which forms the
bends to create the locking edges and cuts the panels according to the
dimensions of the roof.
Because
Mike can cut the panels as he needs them, there will be minimal impact on our
grounds as he works. He will not work on Sundays, but you may see work going on
at any other time, as weather permits. Meanwhile, all of our usual activities
will go on as scheduled.
The
other construction project impacting some of us is the replacement of Butler’s
bridge at the intersection of Whittier Rd. and Hwy 113. I drove by yesterday
and saw that the spans have been put in place, so they are making progress
despite the rain. Hopefully they will be able to reopen the road on schedule!
So,
life goes on, with the usual bumps and obstacles. We take detours and try to
remember to look for the blessings along the way. We are so fortunate to live
in this beautiful part of God’s world, and to have the resources needed to take
care of our roads and buildings. I remain grateful to be here among you, and to
all of you who are contributing to our roof project!

MORNING PRAYER
Wednesday's
Morning Prayer readings
from Holy Women, Holy Men focus on Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The questions we
raise during the homily-discussion time beg for answers, so after Morning
Prayer, we search through biblical commentaries to find some. We are surprised
that they are in John's Gospel, which we associate more with his images of
Jesus saying, "I am the bread of Life" or the glorious opening,
"In the Beginning was the Word..." rather than with stories of
Jesus's ministry.
At
the wedding in Cana, Jesus appears with his disciples and his mother, Mary, in
the first public sign that the presence (essence, glory) of God exists in Him.
Mary who has, since her son's birth, kept the knowledge of his eventual death
"locked in her heart" is here at the start of his public life. We are
interested in how she is portrayed by John, and how, as Jesus's mother, she
appears at various points in his ministry.
Here,
then, are some photos of how "curiouser and curiouser" we become.

RAISE THE ROOF
The Quilt Project’s next meeting is Monday August 27th
, assembly day. We will meet in the Parish Hall at 9:30 to sew the 12 1/2”
patches into a quilt.
On Monday, September 10th, assuming all is ready, we will put the quilt on the frame and begin
quilting, beginning at 9:30 in the Parish hall.
Everyone is invited to help make this happen. If you would like
to participate in any way please let Barbara Lord know. Or just come to the
Parish Hall on those days and enjoy the fellowship!

Psalm 105:1 Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name; make known his deeds among the peoples.
Struggling to pray sometimes—or not knowing where to begin—is a familiar experience. I have found that thanksgiving is a great place to start when I struggle in my prayer life. Reflecting on the blessings that God has given me can be like following a bread-crumb trail back to the source of those blessings. In his book, Letters to Malcolm, theologian C.S. Lewis suggests we see blessings as the easiest path to God. As Lewis says, “The warmth of a ray of sunlight can lead us back to the source of that warmth, the sun.”
What blessings in your life have helped lead you back to God? Does your work help you understand the ways in which God is reaching out to you? Does forgiving someone who hurt you help you better understand how God forgives us when we fall short? Does the love of your family help you better understand the love of God?
MOVING FORWARD: If your prayers are in a slump, try letting your blessings revive your quiet time.
