FROM THE RECTOR
Our
next Taize Evening Service is on Wednesday, August 29 at 5:30. Please join us
for this contemplative service, with Taize chants led by Val on her harp, and
times of silence.
You
may remember that back in the spring I wrote about the possibility of a parish
retreat at the monastery of the Society of St. John the Evangelist in
Cambridge, MA. I have inquired about dates again, and the possibilities are
October 18-21 (5 people), November
1 – 4 (6 people), Jan 17 – 20 (8+ people). All of those dates are for
Friday afternoon – Sunday
afternoon.
The
cost is $130 per night per person, or total of $260 per person. All meals are
included – and are delicious! Most meals are taken in silence, with either
music in the background or one of the brothers reading from a book. The rooms
are small and simple, not unlike the brothers’ cells. Each room has a twin bed,
desk and desk chair, an arm chair, small dresser and a prayer desk. There is a sink
in each room; toilets and showers are “down the hall” – but very nice. The
guest house was completely remodeled about six years ago. The Monastery is
located on Memorial Drive, facing the Charles River, and is just off Harvard
Square.
One
of the brothers will lead our retreat, meaning that there will be one or two
group gatherings a day with topics for reflection. Morning Prayer, the
Eucharist, Noonday Prayers, Evening Prayer and Compline are held each day.
Guests are invited to all the services and it is expected that guests will
attend at least the Eucharist and one of the Daily Office services. All of the
services are chanted, and guests are invited to join in at appropriate places.
Silence is observed except for group meetings and worship. More information
is available at https://www.ssje.org/about-the-monastery-guesthouse.
If
you are interested in attending a retreat at the monastery, now is the time to
make plans. Please let me know at RectorSAITV@gmail.com if you would like to attend and which dates are
possible for you. As you can see from the information I was given, which date
we go is in part dependent on how many people want to attend. Again the
possibilities are: October 18-21 (5 people), November 1 – 4 (6 people), Jan 17 –
20 (8+ people). Please let me
know if you are interested by Wednesday, August 29.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR TODAY
THURSDAY, August 23
Job 1:21 [Job] said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Can you imagine praising the Lord after losing everything in life important to you? I can’t. I struggled with praising God after losing out on a promotion recently. I even get mad when my fantasy football team does poorly. Yet in today’s reading, Job prays words of acceptance and graciousness after losing all of his possessions, his wealth, and even his children.
Job reminds us that each day of our lives is a gift of unmerited grace given by our Creator. I wrote this on my 16,800th day of life. That’s a lot of days, and I have taken far too many of them for granted.
I didn’t think about the gift of being able to run until a pulled muscle made it hard to even walk. I wasn’t able to praise God in the midst of the injury either. But maybe I will remember Job’s faithfulness and pray for the grace to respond differently next time.
