FROM THE RECTOR
Last Friday Bishop Hirschfeld hosted a Zoom call for diocesan clergy to discuss some of the resolutions from General Convention, particularly relating to Prayer Book revision. It was reported that revision and publication of a new Book of Common Prayer would cost 1.5 – 2 million dollars. This, along with various other factors, led to a resolution to explore new liturgies during the next three years and report back to the 2021 General Convention rather than to begin Prayer Book revision. This resolution was passed. For the full text of the resolution go to https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/10/house-of-bishops-proposes-expanded-path-for-prayer-book-revision/.

Bishop Rob has given us permission to explore the existing liturgies of other churches in the Anglican Communion. I have already begun looking at Eucharistic Prayers from the Church of England, the Anglican Church of Canada, and the New Zealand Prayer Book, and will be sharing these resources with our Liturgy Committee (Gretchen Behr-Svendsen, Bernice Thompson, Lisa Thompson and Sammie Wakefield).

It is our practice At St. Andrew’s to change our service music and prayers on a seasonal basis to reflect the theme and flavor of the current liturgical season. We are currently in the season after Pentecost, which is the longest, lasting from the Sunday after Pentecost until Advent begins in late November or early December (the first Sunday of Advent this year is December 2). Because this season is so long we typically make changes in our service about halfway through, or in early September. We usually alternate between Prayer Book liturgies and those from Enriching Our Worship.

The Liturgy Committee and I met this week to discuss this. We will be looking at Eucharistic Prayers from the prayer books mentioned above and expect to choose one for use during the rest of the Season after Pentecost, probably beginning in late September.
We are excited to delve into the new resources available to us and wanted to let you know about this. But know that we are not looking for anything wildly different from what we normally do. What we will look for are fresh imagery and expressions of our Anglican faith, language that includes more expansive images of God (i.e. not limited to male pronouns), and appreciation and care of God’s creation.

We seek a balance between retaining the prayers in our Prayer Book that we know and love and exposing ourselves to new ways of experiencing God and our faith. Part of our discussion this week centered around the importance of prayers that we all know by heart and can say together. We do not want to lose that. And we will return to the Prayer Book in Advent.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns. If there is interest I would be happy to hold a discussion one Sunday after church.

P.S. 8:00-ers, we will continue our use of Rite I, and will take a few minutes in a service in September to discuss whether you wish to use any of the new resources.

Psalm 18:2 My God, my rock in whom I put my trust, my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my refuge; you are worthy of praise.

Many years ago, I attended training for a special trauma therapy developed by groundbreaking psychologist Francine Shapiro. The training included a relaxation exercise called the Safe Place.

The person facilitating the Safe Place exercise asks the client to imagine the safest place he or she can think of—real or imaginary. The therapist then guides the client in developing the Safe Place in rich detail. What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it smell like? What do you feel when you think of this safe place?

When you imagine God as a rock that you hide in, how do you feel? When you imagine God as a fortress, do you grasp a sense of how much God loves you and wants to protect you?

MOVING FORWARD: If you try this exercise yourself, you’ll find that imagining your Safe Place can be powerfully calming. Today’s psalm provides some great images as prompts.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A Prayer for Use upon Waking
Early in the morning we seek your presence, O God,
not because you are ever absent from us
but because often we are absent from you
at the heart of each moment
where you forever dwell.
In the rising of the sun,
in the unfolding color and shape of the morning
open our eyes to the mystery of this moment
that in every moment
we may know your life-giving presence.
Open our eyes to this moment
that in every moment
we may know you as the one who is always now.
