CENTERING PRAYER-With Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast

Please join us in the sanctuary at 5:30 Tuesday evenings during the month of August for an opportunity to deepen and/or broaden your prayer life.  Centering Prayer is a simple practice of meditation which focuses on your personal relationship with God. Whereas you may ‘center’ alone, the combined energy of a group of people is noteworthy.  Thomas Keaton and Richard Rohr are advocates of quiet prayer, and research has clearly demonstrated its value for adults and children (Newburg). The Rev. Dr. Midge Pendergast will lead us in this prayer practice. We will end no later than 6:30. No experience is necessary. Come and pray with us. For more information please see Midge.

FROM THE RECTOR
Roof Update
If you’ve been by the church this week you may have wondered why work on the roof hasn’t begun. Our contractor expected to receive the metal panels for our roof last week, but delivery was not until Tuesday of this week. We also needed to make sure that his work would not interfere with the Steak and Lobster Dinner on Friday night. When I talked to him on Monday he was concerned with the weather forecast for rain, and how long it will take to strip the old roofing (there are two layers of shingles under the existing metal) from the front portion of the church. He doesn't want to get caught in a storm with the roof decking exposed.

He has about a week's worth of work to do in his shop, so between weather concerns and the lobster dinner, we decided it would be best if he works in his shop this week and begins work on site next week. Of course there's a good deal of rain in the forecast for next week too, but hopefully he will have longer windows of clear weather. Fortunately, we have plenty of time before winter weather comes!

Meanwhile, my brother and his two boys are here for a couple of days this week, and I’m taking a couple of vacation days. We went up Mt. Washington yesterday, and even though the peak was socked in, it was still impressive - and nice and cool as well!
Today we’re off to Gunstock for zip lining.

Hope to see you all at the Steak and Lobster Dinner!

RAISE THE ROOF

Monday August 27th is assembly day. We will meet in the Parish Hall at 9:30 to sew the 12 1/2” patches into a quilt.

On Monday, September 10th, assuming all is ready, we will put the quilt on the frame and begin quilting, beginning at 9:30 in the Parish hall.

Everyone is invited to help make this happen. If you would like to participate in any way please let Barbara Lord know. Or just come to the Parish Hall on those days and enjoy the fellowship!

Pledge cards for Raise the Roof project can be found
on the back wall bulletin board in the parish hall.

John 1:46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

When I was growing up in the early 1980s, many parent-types were concerned about the influence rock musician Prince was having on teenagers. With his provocative clothing and the explicit lyrics of his songs, people asked if anything good could come out of this strange young man from Minneapolis.

But there was more to Prince than outrageous antics. Those of us who took the time to wade through the strange costumes found a man deeply devoted to Jesus Christ. While Prince wrote many songs about romance and sex, he also wrote many songs about God. In fact, the B-side to “Purple Rain” was a song called “God,” which was explicit in a different way—explicitly religious.

Many people thought nothing good could come out of Prince, just like people thought nothing good could come out of Nazareth. They were wrong and doubted God’s power to bless the world with unlikely people. But really, that’s all God ever does. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: When have you been blessed by someone you thought least likely to do so? How did that change you?

Butler Bridge, at the intersection of Whittier Rd and Hwy 113, is closed. Replacing the bridge is expected to take four weeks, so plan on taking an alternate route to St. Andrew’s for the rest of August.
