FROM THE RECTOR
Though it still feels like summer today, fall is surely approaching. School is back in session, a few maples have begun to turn, and our highways aren’t so clogged with traffic. Along with that comes the departure of many of our summer members – as happy as I was to see them coming back as summer began, I am equally sad to see them return to their winter homes.

For me, September has always also meant the beginning of the program year at church. That is not so evident here, as we don’t change our service times (as many churches do for the summer) and we don’t have a Sunday School that begins again after Labor Day. But last spring we began a book study group, and when we last met we planned to pick up again this fall. The book we read last fall, Living into God’s Dream, led us into discussions about racism and white privilege, and we decided to read Waking Up White by Debbie Irving this fall. The best time to meet for most people was after the late service.
Due to a couple of things happening in the next few weeks that will interfere with the book study, we will begin it on Sunday, October 7 following the 9:00 service. I will be in Chicago next weekend (September 13-16) to celebrate my brother’s 70th birthday. The Vestry has chosen September 30th as the day to celebrate our new roof. It may or may not actually be completed then, but regardless, we want to celebrate the very successful Raise the Roof Campaign with a potluck brunch. So mark your calendars for the celebratory brunch on September 30 and the beginning of the book study on October 7!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
From Night Prayer, The New Zealand Prayer Book
(mentioned in my sermon last week)

Lord, it is night.

The night is for stillness.

Let us be still in the presence of God.

It is night after a long day.
What has been done has been done;

what has not been done has not been done;
let it be.

The night is dark.
Let our fears of the darkness of the
 world and of our own lives

rest in you.

The night is quiet.

Let the quietness of your peace enfold us,
all dear to us,
and all who have no peace.

The night heralds the dawn.
Let us look expectantly to a new day,

new joys,
new possibilities.

In your name we pray.

Amen.

FROM Deb IN THE OFFICE
OFFICE ATTIC CLEANOUT
Friday, October 19th
It is my plan to tackle the office attic with the goals of
1. Bringing down the many boxes of old files for a shredding company.
2. Removing the carpet rolls from the attic to be stored elsewhere.
3. Organizing current file boxes (7 years) along with extra supplies from the office.

It is a very small area of storage for office files that has become dangerously crowded.
I am hoping for volunteers who will be able to lift boxes and carpet.
It should be much cooler up there by October 19th (I hope!)

Please let me know if you will be able to help.
Thank you
Deb
