FROM THE RECTOR
As many
of you know, I ended my time away in April with a retreat at the SSJE Monastery
in Cambridge, MA. I’ve been going there since around 2001, and it has become an
important part of my spiritual life. While there last month, I asked about
bringing a group from St. Andrew’s on retreat in the fall. My timing was good,
as they were beginning the process of planning their calendar for next fall. The guesthouse manager will send me a choice of dates in the next
several weeks. It would be helpful to have an idea now of how many people are
interested in this opportunity.
The
specifics I can give you now are that it would take place on a weekend (Friday
afternoon – Sunday afternoon) and the cost is $130 per night per person, or total of $260 per person. All meals are included – and are delicious! Most meals are
taken in silence, with either music in the background or one of the brothers
reading from a book. The rooms are small and simple, not unlike the brothers’
cells. Each room has a twin bed, desk and desk chair, an upholstered arm chair, small dresser and a prayer desk.
There is a sink in each room; toilets and showers are “down the hall” – but
very nice. The guest house was completely remodeled about six years ago. The
Monastery is located on Memorial Drive, facing the Charles River, and is just
off Harvard Square.
One of
the brothers will lead our retreat, meaning that there will be one or two group
gatherings a day with topics for reflection. Morning Prayer, the Eucharist,
Noonday Prayers, Evening Prayer and Compline are held each day. Guests are
invited to all the services and it is expected that guests will attend at least
the Eucharist and one of the Daily Office services. All of the services are
chanted, and guests are invited to join in at appropriate places. Silence is
observed except for group meetings and
worship. More information is available at https://www.ssje.org/about-the-monastery-guesthouse.
If you
think you might want to attend such a retreat, please let me know at RectorSAITV@gmail.com. I don’t need a
commitment now, but would like to have an idea of how many people are
interested. Let me know if you have questions.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY FOR
TODAY
Acts 19:24-25 A man named Demetrius, a
silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to
the artisans. These he gathered together, with the workers of the same trade,
and said, “Men, you know that we get our wealth from this business.”
I had
never thought of Paul as an economic disruptor until studying this passage.
Much like how Lyft and Airbnb have changed taxis and lodging, Paul’s message
disrupts several industries. Artisans, silversmiths, and priests face the
challenge of squaring off against the gospel. But their trinkets, idols, and
rules are no match for the will and love of God.
God is
not to be found in any idol made by human hands, Paul proclaims. There is
neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free. This deeply challenges the status quo
and power structures in place during Paul’s lifetime. These statements may seem
obvious to many of us today, but this kind of profound, systematic disruption
and truth telling is exactly why Jesus is killed. Is it any wonder why Paul is
constantly on the run?
MOVING FORWARD: When
was the last time God’s message disrupted your world? How did you respond?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I looked down at the ground
and
noticed a rainbow.
The mid-day rain had mixed with
the
oil and dirt on the pavement
I remembered the story of Noah
and
the Ark and the covenant that
God
made with him…and us… that
when
the purity of God’s love
mixes
with the oil and dirt of
human
sin, God forma a rainbow!
I will never look at a rainbow
the
same way again.
