FROM THE RECTOR

Oh, my! What a wonderful welcome back you gave me on Sunday!! I was so surprised, and a bit overwhelmed as well (but in a good way)! I can’t wait to get all those pansies and herbs in the ground. We’ll see if Mother Nature will cooperate and give us some nice sunny warm spring days. I (and the kids) loved the cake, the rest of the food was delicious, as always, and my cats love their new toys.

I am so grateful to be your new Rector, and excited about our future together. As I said on Sunday morning, I still experience waves of excitement and joy about being called here. Perhaps the best part of all of this is that we are all celebrating this together!
I had a great ten day trip to northern New Mexico and the Durango area of Colorado, followed by several days at home and then time at the SSJE monastery in Cambridge, MA.

SSJE Monastery
Three weeks away gave me ample time for physical and mental rest. The time at the monastery gave me time to be centered spiritually, and focus on the next five years we will spend together.  All of this culminated at our Vestry retreat on April 28, where we looked ahead and began to flesh out our goals and strategies for achieving them.  I am beyond grateful for having this time away, and excited to be back among you. I missed you!

Acts 15:28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose on you no further burden than these essentials.
This verse from Acts is just one line, but it speaks volumes about authority in the early church. In this new movement, those who have risked their lives for the gospel are left to define what is essential to the faith—and which burdensome aspects may be set aside. This line calls us back to the mandate we find in Micah, where we learn that to do God’s will means to live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before our Maker.
I recently read about a schoolteacher named Elisabeth Schmitz who lived in Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany. Unlike many of the theologians and church leaders of her day, Elisabeth called her church to resist Nazism and risked her life to harbor Jews and help them to flee. Today she is celebrated for her grasp of the essentials of the faith.
MOVING FORWARD: What are the essentials of your life of faith? Write them on a notecard to keep with you. Read and pray over them, and see how this changes the way you minister to the world around you.

 FROM Deb IN THE OFFICE
It is helpful with scheduling if the church office calendar has meetings and events up to date. If you are a committee and meet at St. Andrew’s please email me as soon as you have your dates scheduled so that I can put them on the calendar. That also goes for event dates!
Thank you
