FROM THE RECTOR
What a great parish meeting we had last Sunday
about the need for a new roof! Thank you to all who attended, asked questions,
and offered input. And thank you to Tom Huckman for his presentation and for
answering our questions, and to Sally DeGroot for all the work she’s done
meeting with roofers and getting bids. The Vestry met on Monday night, and
agreed to accept the bid from Mike Lord pending receipt of his updated bid including
the verbal assurances he has given us.
We will have an electronic vote at that time, and then proceed with an
application for funds through the Diocesan Advance Fund and raising money
through grants and pledges. We are told that it will take 60-90 days to receive
a loan from the Advance Fund, so anticipate work on the roof beginning in the
fall if all goes as expected.
Throughout the week I’ve continued to reflect on
the Royal Wedding. I am not usually so captivated by this kind of event, and I
think the difference for me is our Presiding Bishop’s sermon and the responses
that followed. I have had huge respect and admiration for him since first
hearing him preach in 1999 when I was in seminary. I was delighted when he was
elected Bishop of North Carolina and then Presiding Bishop. He is so well able
to preach the Good News in a way that speaks to our souls. His style is not what we’re used to in the
Episcopal Church (nor what those in the Church of England expected!) yet his
message resonates deep within me. His wedding sermon was a Pentecost message of
the power of the Holy Spirit to unite us in love.
If you don't believe me, just stop and imagine. Think and imagine a world where love is the way.
Imagine our homes and families where love is the way. Imagine neighborhoods and communities where love is the way.
Imagine governments and nations where love is the way. Imagine business and commerce where this love is the way.
Imagine this tired old world where love is the way. When love is the way - unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive.
IMAGINE
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
When love is the way, then no child will go to bed hungry in this world ever again.
When love is the way, we will let justice roll down like a mighty stream and righteousness like an ever-flowing brook.
When love is the way, poverty will become history. When love is the way, the earth will be a sanctuary.
When love is the way, we will lay down our swords and shields, down by the riverside, to study war no more.
When love is the way, there's plenty good room - plenty good room - for all of God's children.
"Because when love is the way, we actually treat each other, well... like we are actually family.
IMAGINE.

Matthew 13:29-30 But [the master] replied, “No; for in
gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of
them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the
reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but
gather the wheat into my barn.”
In this passage, we
encounter the ambiguous image of weeds and wheat bound up with one another, the
root systems inextricably intertwined.
This is a perfect
image for our ambiguous selves and world. The older I get, the less black and
white things become. I’ve discovered that good people can enable or undertake
immoral actions, that so-called “misbehavers” can open up space for the rest of
us to breathe more easily. And slowly—very slowly—I am also learning the wisdom
of the master’s advice: Sometimes it is best to wait a season or two before
passing judgment.
MOVING FORWARD: Consider your own field of weeds and
wheat, their intertwined roots, and the ways they share and compete for
resources. What does it mean to allow both to grow?
